Every year as the golden days of summer fade away, the annual Newark Days Celebration returns offering visitors and residents one last chance to have fun in the sun, renew friendships and look back at the city’s history and appreciate its present-day culture and diversity.

Dave Fink, spokesman and entertainment director for the non-profit Newark Days Celebration Inc., which puts on the event, said it dates back more than six decades to the incorporation of the City of Newark on September 22, 1955. This year’s four-day event will open with a carnival and food festival at 5pm on Thursday, September 19 and continue through Sunday, September 22. Admission is free.

Ohlone Women’s Volleyball team held their annual Renegade Invitational Tournament on August 31. This cherished tournament welcomes two teams each year to the Ohlone Fremont campus to mark the beginning of the volleyball season. This year, the visiting teams included Porterville and Mendocino College, from Southern and Northern California, respectively.

Head coach Courtney Owyang-Paras, has been involved with Ohlone Women’s Volleyball since 2019 as assistant coach before becoming head coach in 2022. Owyang-Paras explains the team’s high expectations regarding the tournament. “Our primary goal going into the tournament was to secure wins,” shares Owyang-Paras. “This was only our second match of the season and our first home game, so we were eager to deliver a strong performance and demonstrate our full potential.”

The factory-laden strip of West Hayward land may be an ordinary feature of the city to many, but the city’s minority community knows well that this area is a shell of its former self. Known as Russell City, the unincorporated area established in 1853 was once a thriving neighborhood for the local Black and Latino populations.

Families owned livestock, and R&B singers like Etta James and Ray Charles would stop to play there routinely. It was blissful. It was peaceful and idyllic. And then the bulldozers came. In 1964, the City of Hayward announced plans to build an industrial park over Russell City, and more than 1,000 people were forced to relocate from their homes.

Sixty years later, Russell City descendants are seeking atonement for their loss. In November of 2021, Hayward City Council issued a formal apology for the displacement of Russell City residents, but this gesture left the grandchildren of the tragedy unsatiated. They’ve demanded reparations so they can begin to build wealth…

Nature is healing. “Being connected with nature, you have a sense that everything is going to be alright,” says photographer May Chen. Her collection of birds photos from the Bay Area and beyond possess a peaceful and mesmerizing quality. However, the story of native wildlife is more complex, as nature symbolizes constancy and endurance and also the consequences of selfishness.

Photographer captures Bay Area through the eyes of birds: May Chen’s Ohlone College exhibit shows vulnerability of wildlife.

Tina Fernandez, Executive Director of HERS Breast Cancer Foundation, says that in the nonprofit world, it’s near unheard of to have the same fundraiser running for two and a half decades.

While Washington Hospital’s Top Hat Gala is on its 38th year, smaller nonprofits often see a drop-off in enthusiasm after a few years as supporters lose interest in the concept. But HERS’ annual 5 and 10K Walk / Run—and now Yoga—event has stood the test of time, celebrating 25 years in 2024.

“I think it’s because of the cause,” she muses. Along with the spring Pink Tie People With Purpose Gala, the event raises money to help un- and under-insured cancer patients access post-surgical recovery products.

Read more about the Sept. 28 event below!

HERS plans for 25th Walk Run Yoga event; Raise funds for underserved cancer patients - and have some fun at the same time!

Know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em

For over two decades, Sharon and I have been fortunate to publish What’s Happening Magazine (1998-2002) and Tri-City Voice (2002- ). Born from curiosity about our relatively new surroundings and frustration with reporting of events after they occurred, we decided to produce a modest newsletter highlighting coming local events. Things quickly spun out of control and we ended up with a full-fledged magazine.

Canvasing the area for information, possible articles and advertisers, the warm people, interesting places, cultural diversity and rich history of the southeast Bay Area soon became apparent. Our first advertiser, Swiss Park in Newark is a good example. Stopping in to what appeared to be a small restaurant and bar, I met Rosemary Ramsell who opened a door to the large meeting hall, ringed with flags of the cantons of Switzerland. She explained that the facility was (and remains) under cooperative Swiss-American ownership and how dairy farms once existed close by.

As we traveled through the area, it became evident that our philosophy of concentrating on local people, local venues and local events was not only a personal commitment, but recognized and well-received by the community.

Over time, we were able to convince more advertisers to join our efforts and many are still with us to this day. Notable among them is Washington Hospital that has been steadfast in its support. The list is too long to enumerate in this column, but they appear throughout our issues and are deeply appreciated. As a broadsheet size publication, Tri-City Voice defied the odds during difficult economic challenges with the help of our loyal readers, subscribers and advertisers.

From a small apartment with our pet cat and rabbit walking over and sitting on our carefully laid pages preparing for printing, to the generous offer by Roland and Terri Willits to occupy space in their building free of charge and finally to our present location and generous support of Larry Fudenna and the Fudenna family, Sharon and I, along with a wonderful staff of editors, writers, in-house and delivery personnel have continued to serve our communities.

With an able staff, supportive community and advertisers, Sharon and I have decided to ensure continuation of Tri-City Voice by joining the Weekly’s group of newspapers and introduce new management.

Father Time has given us clear signals to spend more time with family, especially our new great-granddaughters. Although we have trained and prepared our staff to carry on our goals and philosophy without us, it is a bittersweet moment with no small amount of regret. However, we anticipate an active retirement with plans for a small business – nothing as grand as Tri-City Voice – to keep us busy.

Thank you is not enough but please accept this sentiment as a deep and true feeling of gratitude for our tumultuous, exciting and wonderful experience.

As the Kenny Rogers song, The Gambler, says, “know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em..” We are walking away from the table with pride in our publication, our communities and what we know will be a bright future for both.
