Unfortunately due to a few major unexpected expenses that came about this past couple of weeks we were unable to get all Secret Gateways orders out by 4/15 as planned. We are continuing to ship all orders until they are fulfilled. Meeting this obligation is our biggest priority and we are shipping out copies as we can. At this point, because every time I plan and set a date something keeps coming up I don't want to set an exact date but by my best estimation we are about three to four weeks away from getting these all fulfilled.

I really should have gone into more detail about the issues we ran into this past year. I know for some people, understandably, it doesn't matter, but for those of whom it does, I want to be more transparent. The biggest cause of delay with this whole project was that when I set up the Kickstarter, I failed to account for all expenses involved with Nox Pareidolia, and that reality didn't become fully clear until it was too late. Between that and other struggles in 2021 of which I have gone into with more detail in the past, things got way behind and we had to fill that financial gap in the cost of this project from our personal expenses, which at the time we were just barely scraping into middle class. Last year, we were finally able to cover the cost of ordering copies and I didn't foresee any issues with the cost of shipping but I had no idea what was in store for us financially.

So, we started shipping and then as I mentioned before, PayPal took two chunks of $600 a piece for a company called Appy Pie of which we had set up our Weird Whispers app with back in 2020 before the Kickstarter. It was an annual plan and I set it to pause in 2021. For whatever reason, they "unpaused" it last year and charged us for 2022 and 2023 respectively. It took months, but we were able to get $600 of that back for the 2022 subscription but PayPal refused to refund the 2023 one. Meanwhile, we hadn't used this service since 2020. By that time I had to use all of that money to cover the cost of three refunds for understandably angry customers. In May our beloved German Shepherd Majour had to be put to sleep due to leg issues and potential abdominal issues. Later that month my best furry friend Ninja, who we had had for 9 years passed due to kidney failure. The vet bills for both animals was in the thousands. We continued to ship copies as we could, albeit very slowly, but most of our money had to go to covering that and two major car repairs between June and September. And then I lost my job in October and didn't get another job to replace that one until January of this year. And living in California is financially brutal. We barely avoided homelessness.

Which brings me to this year. Three plus months of being without the majority of our income put us behind on a lot of bills including our car payments. We also had to have a tire replaced in December or January, I can't remember which at this point. Anyway, we got a good chunk of that squared away before our update last month and I felt confident that we would be able to get these out by now and then our granddaughter, Zoey, who we are guardians of, needed foot braces for severe toe walking. She has been getting treatment for this for months but up till now it had been either covered by insurance or we were able to be billed. But these braces are through a different company and due to our deductible not being met on Jen's insurance, they require half of the cost up front and half upon completion and these braces cost over $1,000. On top of that, with starting my new job, I had a waiting period before I could get insurance myself. Well, the time came at the end of last month and when I went to sign up, I learned that my employer takes out the entire month's payment from the first check of every month. So, that combined with the braces and other bills and the fact that I hadn't accounted for just how incredibly expensive some international shipments would be (many costing upwards of $100 or more per set to ship) has put us off track for meeting this deadline. And I'm sorry I didn't say something a few days ago when I spoke with Jon but I have been waiting on news about a potential business loan from our bank and was hoping to have that information ready in time to update folks but we are still awaiting a decision on that.

Again, we are incredibly sorry for all of the delays. I will have more updates as soon as we hear back about the loan etc. If we are approved we will be able to ship these out much more quickly than if not but either way these books will go out to everyone who ordered them! Thank you for your patience and understanding and keep an eye out for an email with tracking from us in the coming weeks if you haven't already received your copies.

It is with great great pleasure and joy for us to be able to announce that finally, after years of delays and struggles, through a global pandemic, the loss of some of our closest friends, extensive hits to my mental health and executive functionality, a huge move to California, and a bunch of other crazy happenstances, today Nightscape Press is going to press with the limited edition Secret Gateways three-book set including extended editions of two of my all time favorite fiction collections, The Secret of Ventriloquism by Jon Padgett and Gateways to Abomination by Matthew M. Bartlett!

Both of these fine books were incredible debut collections when they were initially released and now they are each extended in beautiful hardcover editions with full color covers and illustrations by Harry 0. Morris and Aeron Alfrey and introductions by Thomas Ligottti and John Langan respectively!

Also, included in this set, the crown jewel at its center, is the brand new collection The Latham-Fielding Liaison, a mind-warping weird horrific collection co-authored by both authors with artwork co-created by Morris and Alfrey, and an introduction by the phenomenal S.P. Miskowski! All three books include fantastic cover letter design by Don Noble!

There have been some changes to the plan. Due to cost constraints and complications we had to go without the slipcase and we will now be doing bookplates for the signatures to save time but we are finally producing these books and I cannot express just how excited I am to share this set with folks!
Within the next week we should receive final unbound proofs from our printer (this is part of the overall printing process with them) and then they’ll start printing the books.

I do also want to take this time to remind those of you who haven’t yet ordered your copies, that there now remains only 52 preorders of this one-time limited run of 250 copies. And once they’re gone, we won’t be printing any more. I'll put a link in the down yonder where you can find them.

Lastly and so very far from leastly, I would like to thank all of you who have had so much patience with and faith in us this past few years. It means the world to us that you have stood by us through all of this and we can’t thank you enough for that!

Anyway, keep an ear out for more updates as the printing and shipping processes begin and updates from other projects begin to surface (and believe me, those ARE coming!).

Sincerely,
Dream and Jennifer Wilson

Forty percent of all sales of this eBook will go to support the Southern Poverty Law Center! The Southern Poverty Law Center is dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society.

This is a ghost story. It has those that scratch at bedroom doors and tap at windows, wanting to be let in. It has those that haunt all of us, long after the others tire of the scratching. For some, doors are not enough.

Bea Holcombe loves her life in Fontaine Falls, a perfect little town tucked away in the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. She has never thought to question that love until her next-door neighbor opens fire on a crowd of black demonstrators gathered in the city park to protest the town’s Confederate statue. Lester Neal has torn open an invisible wound in Fontaine Falls, and what festers inside of it will change Bea, her family, and the dimming mind of her mother forever.

As the national media descends and violence spreads, the town endures a conflict it is no longer insulated from. Bea is given a special sight so that she may witness how deep the rot has burrowed inside the postcard charm of Fontaine Falls. And she will be asked to turn the light of scrutiny and complicity upon herself as she is visited by horrors that won’t rest quietly. “This is a ghost story,” she tells us repeatedly. This unflinching, poetic novella is an examination of that claim—its layers of truth, of untruth, and the uneasy specters that inhabit modern America.

04/07/2020

A lot of small press publishers are in trouble right now and we are no exception. A couple of days ago our recent Charitable Chapbook, The Invention of Ghosts by Gwendolyn Kiste, sold out and we were able to send Gwendolyn's chosen charity The National Aviary $1,000.

This is the third successfully sold out signed, numbered, and color-illustrated Charitable Chapbook we've done. Jon Padgett's The Broker of Nightmares contributed $1,000 to the ACLU in late 2018 and Matthew M. Bartlett's If It Bleeds gave $1,000 to The Dakin Humane Society in early 2019. (We've also raised thousands of dollars for the Colorectal Cancer Alliance and RAICES with the anthologies Fantasy for Good and Horror for RAICES respectively.)

But publishing beautiful limited books that contribute a good chunk to charity is expensive and with these trying times on the world stage and our recent troubles at home, we are struggling to pay our bills. And with the recent stay at home orders, our color printer is now temporarily closed which has put several of our limited book projects on hold.

In order to raise money to help toward getting us back on track, we now have Nightscape Press gift cards available for sale on our webstore. And now through the end of April 2020: Get a FREE gift card with your purchase of any gift card of $25 or more!

You can also purchase any of our currently available titles by authors like Stephen Graham Jones, Lisa Mannetti, Michael Wehunt, and more, or pre-order upcoming books from us by authors like Michael Cisco, Livia Llewellyn, and Jon Padgett. Regardless, thank you so much for supporting small press and dark speculative fiction in whatever way you can!
