Today Black Widow officially went over 14,000 miles driven in combined efforts. Our run today was to Swannanoa. We took a load of much needed supplies, everything from OTC medicines to cleaning supplies, propane tanks and cinder blocks, clothes and hygiene supplies.

Thanks to some generous donations we were able to get 6 extra full 20 lb cylinders.

Hey 🙌🏻 - my third print auction is live! This auction will go directly to helping purchase building supplies for three displaced families in the Burnsville community of Ramseytown.

Bidding will continue through the weekend and finish on Monday, February 10th at 9 PM EST.

Without insurance, these families have been left to figure out how to rebuild on their own. 100% of the sales of these prints will go into an account to purchase items from their materials lists.

As always, thank you for bidding and sharing!

I’m not a big fan of being in front of the camera and while I am honored for the recognition, I’m perfectly happy in the background just doing my part. That said, I want to express my gratitude to the Franklin, NC Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and staff for the Above & Beyond Award at the Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet last night.

Print auction number 3 is now live!

This is a big one, as we are hoping to help people get into homes that need a lot of work to make them habitable.

How it works: place your bid in the comment section for that photograph. Minimum bid is $100. Winning bidder gets to choose print size UP TO 24x36.

Bidding will close on Monday, February 10th, at 9 pm.

Even if you don’t bid, please share this post so people can participate, help hurricane victims, and get a piece of art to hang! As always, thank you all for bidding, sharing, and supporting my efforts. Hopefully this large selection of my work will encourage more bidding 😃

Today was a good day. Took two donated arm chairs and a brand new refrigerator to Pastor Ron in Burnsville. The fridge is for a single mom of two who lost everything to Helene and a last minute text from Sonya got me a brand new bike for one of the kids. The chairs and donated plates, silverware, and other items have gone into storage for the families who are rebuilding.

After I dropped off those items, I drove down into Ramseytown to check on my people down there and how they are doing. The bridge that washed is steadily improving, but it is a long way from finished. The road is passable, but rain still causes issues. This is going to be a very long journey. Some people in this area just got power back LAST WEEKEND.

We can’t forget to keep these people front of mind. I will have some video I shot from my drone to post shortly. You’ll see it’s still a mess. Please keep spreading the word so these people won’t be forgotten.

I’ve been a little absent from social media the last few weeks as I have been advocating for western North Carolina in my day job capacity. I’ve been to Atlanta, Miami, and NYC speaking with travelers and travel writers. I fielded a lot of questions about how the area is recovering from Helene and how people are doing. I explained as best I could, but I also told folks that our areas need visitors to come along with their tourism dollars to help the region recover.

On Saturday 02/01 - I took a load of donated furniture, patio heaters, and supplies to Burnsville and got an update on how some of the folks I’ve been working with are doing.

I have three families who lost everything and are now trying to refurbish some dilapidated homes to be able to have a temporary home. The last image in this album is a material list from just one of the three homes. My next print auction will go to funding as much of their building needs. We are working with a supply store in Burnsville that will sell needed materials at cost, which is a HUGE help.

Stay tuned for the next print auction to go live this week!

We did a bit of relief work Friday & Saturday. On Friday, we took a load of supplies from the Franklin Police Department in to Swannanoa. It was a cold day, we also saw quite a bit of snow blowing in the early afternoon.

Saturday was the long day. Thanks to the coordination of Alisha Nelson-Upton, we left Franklin, NC and took the long way around to Andersonville, TN to pick up and deliver a 100% free and clear donated 27’ RV to Pastor Ron Buchanan in Burnsville. The lovely couple who donated the RV were so happy to be able to help people in need, and in this critical time of extreme cold weather moving in, the timing couldn’t have been better. It took us about 12 hours total to make that happen, but knowing where it was heading and its purpose, made the day worth every second.

We also delivered two of four generators that were donated by a church in Highlands, coordinated by Emily Chastain and her dad.

I won’t be making as many runs in the coming weeks, but I am considering having another print auction to focus solely on propane tanks and fuel for heaters that will need to be running a lot more to keep people safe and warm. If you’re interested, please drop a comment below!

Thank you for all the support you have provided, it has been incredibly valuable to storm victims.

Happy New Year to you and yours! Wishing you all the very best for this new year ahead. This has definitely been a year to remember for me for so many reasons.

The obvious is what Helene did to so many people in WNC and beyond, but out of that has come friendships and people who I never would have gotten to know otherwise.

So here’s to packing up 2024 and looking forward to a new chapter in this book of life. Take care of one another and yourselves!

Merry Christmas to you! I hope your day is filled with joy and laughter with family and friends.

This past Sunday Sonya and I went into the Green Mountain area to Byrd’s Chapel Baptist Church, one of the places I have been going into since shortly after Helene. We attended church with the congregation and then went to the Fellowship Hall where we ate, packed meals, ate a little more, packed a lot more meals, and enjoyed the company of many folks we only just met on Sunday. We listened to some of the stories from folks who lost everything, shared tears, and hugs of comfort.

On Monday, we loaded up one last pre-Christmas run to Swannanoa loaded with 8 bikes, lots more gifts, 4 donated 20lb propane tanks, and a lot of donated necessities. Talking with Katie, she told me we were able to help 40 families have a Christmas they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to have. Absolutely incredible.

After wishing Katie Merry Christmas, we took a little time in Asheville before we went to the NC Arboretum for the Winter Lights.

These last three months have been a constant reminder of how precious life is, how quickly we can lose everything, and the enduring spirit of the people I’ve been able to get to know. Over 10,000 miles driven and counting, the needs of many will continue well into 2025.

Thank you all for your support, donations, and willingness to step in and help. I hope you can feel the love of the people you have been helping recover from the storm.

Merry Christmas to you all, I hope you have a wonderful holiday season with friends and family.

Another day, another trip into Swannanoa. We went in heavy, loaded with lots of Christmas gifts, two more generators, and a ton of camping gear that was generously donated. We also grabbed 4 cans of gas and 5 - 20lb propane tanks.

The other wonderful thing that happened today was the 20’ storage container I rented for Katie arrived today. Thanks to so many generous donations from YOU who have made donations or bought prints from the auctions. She will have this container for at least the next three months.

Thank you all 🙏🏻

This post has been weeks, or more, in the making. It is a post that wouldn’t have been possible without the support of so many of you folks. Today, I went shopping for the Thanksgiving/Christmas meal that I held the first print auction for.

On Sunday, December 22nd, the Byrd’s Chapel Baptist Church will have their annual Christmas program which will be followed by the meal which we have been planning for anywhere between 200-250 people. For those who can’t make it to the church, meals will be delivered by side by side where needed, so anyone who wants to enjoy will be able to.

When I first met Pastor Ron, I was working with a group doing SAR/Wellness checks while hiking what used to be Hwy 19E along the Cane River. I handed him a business card with my contact info and told him that I’d be back. Over the next two months, I’ve become friends with Ron and somewhere along the early days I told him I had the idea of having a community Thanksgiving meal that I would be responsible for. I wasn’t sure how I was going to pull it off, but then the print auction idea came to me.

So long story short, I have all of you who bid and purchased prints from that first auction. Without all of your generosity, I am not sure how I would have made this happen.

14 Turkeys, 5 Hams, 6 Cases of Brown & Serve Rolls, let’s say A LOT of desserts, and 38 jars of gravy (yeah, it’s all the store had 😂). Other side dishes are being made by church members.

With a humble heart, I thank you all.

If you’re so inclined, I have put my Venmo & PayPal info at the end of the post. I appreciate the support, a little goes a long way!

Had a long but rewarding day today delivering Christmas gifts, generators, supplies, and more to Swannanoa. Then I took Katie to Fletcher to meet up with some amazing folks from Greensboro and we loaded the trailer again with an incredible amount of gifts for the community that Katie lives in. Thank you to all the generous donations for these families, you all are making a huge impact on so many families.

Tomorrow’s update will be another doozy and another one that many of you are directly responsible for, so stay tuned!

Big day today. Big THANKS goes out to Cory and Rob from Outdoor 76 for showing up and showing out big time for folks in Swannanoa. After Katie’s relief location suffered a robbery and vandalism, she had many needs that had to be re-supplied. Thanks to the generosity of the donations they had received, we were able to reload Katie up.

With some morning fuel from Crabtree General Store & Coffee Vault and Just Donuts, we set out to Swannanoa with the load. There wasn’t an inch to spare inside the Subie and the new game we invented called Trailer Tetris had it stacked and packed tightly.

Almost immediately upon our arrival, some folks showed up asking for items we had brought in. Many thanks to all who have donated and helped support our efforts. The looks on the faces and the hugs from strangers we receive, we pass on to you all.
