Along the way, he traveled the world and forged connections with countless people and met many notable world figures, from England’s Prince (and now King) Charles to U.S. President George H.W. Writing the Past: Crafting Historical Characters
A Conversation with Authors on Bringing History to Life

Penn Club, New York CIty
Monday, April 28, 6:30 p.m.

On Monday, April 28, the Penn Club (30 West 44th Street) will host a discussion about the challenges of writing historical fiction. The reception starts at 6:00 p.m. and discussion at 6:30 p.m. Our author Katherine Kaye is honored to participate with Lauren Willig. Nonmembers of the Penn Club may RSVP via email: [email protected]; the event fee is $32.50.

As Katherine wrote “Sailing with the Wind of Freedom,” she had many opportunities to reflect on the challenges they discuss. Lascarina Bouboulis passed into history and legend as ‘Bouboulina,’ a folkloric heroine about whom little enough is known, and what little is known is open to question. Even her appearance has been lost in the fog of history. Of the four images below, only the one on the left is thought to have been drawn from life.

The three images of Bouboulina as a young woman and a military commander were created after she died: two (by the French Simonau and the German von Hess) are included in the “Historical Album of the Greek War of Independence,” 1821; an unknown Russian engraver depicts her on horseback. The lithograph on the left may be the only actual likeness of the heroine, made by Godefry Engelmann in 1825, the year of her death; Professor Sharon Gerstel discusses it in her contribution to a scholarly anthology edited by Professor April Kalogeropoulos Householder.

Book Description:
Throwing off the dock lines in Hawaii in 1977 and leaving everything familiar behind, three young, inexperienced sailors head out into the open ocean aboard “Lille Dansker,” a beautiful old wooden-gaff-rigged ketch. Bound for an unknown destination, anywhere in the South Pacific, the sailors face challenging and life-changing encounters with the natural world. After landfall in Bora Bora, they voyage through French Polynesia, working alongside and fishing with the islanders.

During the trip, the sailors gain a deep appreciation for teamwork and self-sufficiency and respect for Mother Nature. They learn to listen to the boat and help her along the way, finding that the ocean always has the final word. As they get to know the people of French Polynesia, they grow to admire the simplicity and genuine goodness of island culture during the 1970s.

Supplemented with photos, illustrations, and other artifacts from the trip, “Somewhere South” offers an intimate view of an unforgettable journey for both experienced sailors and armchair adventurers alike.

Frank Marini shows the true definition of customer focus in all aspects and departments of a company in this pragmatic explanation of how he guided Railbookers Group, where he serves as president and CEO, through a rapid period of growth and achievement. The approach uses data, but also focuses on just using your ears and eyes to focus on your customers and put them in charge of development, direction, and strategy. He admits it can be scary at times, but allowing your customer to be the real CEO creates a growth path and opportunities that go well beyond what you could have imagined. “Staying On Track” is a vital, easy-to-follow blueprint for business growth and success.

“Mother Brook and the Mills of East Dedham”

Judith A. Neiswander, Author (Philadelphia, PA)

Rob Levine, Book Designer / Art Director
Published by Damianos Publishing

Paperback, 7x10”, 160 pages, 69 photographs, $18.95, ISBN 9781941573662
Publication date: September 6, 2024

Book Description:
As one of the first two inland towns to be settled in Massachusetts, Dedham has an ancient history. One of earliest accomplishments of the town’s first settlers was the creation of Mother Brook, a channel three-quarters of a mile in length that diverts water from the Charles River through an inland stream to empty into the Neponset. Excavated by hand between 1639-41, at a time when the town consisted of fewer than 30 families, it was a feat of engineering that would be remarkable even today. Mother Brook, arguably the nation’s first power canal, has been celebrated by historians who have focused on the town’s earliest years.

In this book, Judy Neiswander tells the story of Mother Brook during the 19th and 20th centuries, when the stream was enlarged to power gigantic textile mills that drew thousands of Irish, German, & Italian immigrant workers to the area. These newcomers lived a highly precarious existence of relentless, exhausting labor under hazardous conditions for barely subsistence-level wages. The bookfocuses on the lives of these workers, their working conditions, where they lived, what kind of social organizations they formed, and how they were viewed by the rest of the town. With persistence and remarkable endurance, they created a lively, diverse, and supportive community with a strong identity that continues to this day. Today, Dedham belongs to the heirs of Mill Village.

One of earliest accomplishments of the town’s first settlers was the creation of Mother Brook, a channel three-quarters of a mile in length that diverts water from the Charles River through an inland stream to empty into the Neponset, creating a waterway strong enough to turn the wheel of a grist mill. Excavated by hand between 1639-41, at a time when the town consisted of fewer than 30 families, it was a feat of engineering that would be remarkable even today. Mother Brook, arguably the nation’s first power canal, has been celebrated by historians who have focused on the town’s earliest years, up to the establishment of the Norfolk Cotton Mill in 1808, and have largely ignored the later period when the fully industrialized textile factories were no longer locally owned.

In this book, Judy Neiswander tells the story of Mother Brook during the 19th and 20th centuries, when the stream was enlarged to power gigantic textile mills that drew thousands of Irish, German, & Italian immigrant workers to the area.
