Tickets on sale Thursday for Carroll students' 'Marian'

A group of Carroll High School students will present the play “Marian, or The True Tale of Robin Hood” at 7 p.m. May 20 at the Foellinger Theatre, 3411 Sherman Blvd., Fort Wayne.

Tickets go on sale at noon Thursday at marianlives.org.

Students moved to produce the play independently after the school administration canceled the play, which explores gender-focused themes. Students quickly surpassed their $50,000 goal. The gofundme account stood at $76,685 as of 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The cancellation came into focus at the Feb. 27 meeting of the Northwest Allen County School Board. Twenty-nine people signed up to speak about the play. Some parents spoke in favor of the cancellation, stating it would have forced the idea of same s*x relationships onto students. Others spoke against the cancellation.

“To hear that that was canceled that Friday morning when the cast list was supposed to be posted that night or Monday morning was really disheartening,” Carroll student Marissa Carroll said at that time.

“We’re supposed to be a community,” Carroll said. “That’s NACS entire thing, is that we’re a community that helps people and makes everybody feel that we have a safe space and that was kind of disregarded."

Superintendent Wayne Barker said the play was canceled due to issues it created among students.

YLNI farm market on Wednesdays, too

The Young Leaders of Northeast Indiana Farmers Market is adding a Wednesday evening market in 2023. YLNI will offer the market in partnership with The History Center, from 4-7 p.m. each Wednesday from June 7-Aug. 30 in the History Center courtyard, 302 E. Berry St. in downtown Fort Wayne.

“There’s no better place to be on a Saturday morning than at the YLNI Farmers Market, and now you can take in that same atmosphere but on a smaller scale during the week,” market manager Ashley Wagner said. "The courtyard under the awnings of the History Center carries so much history. It’s an honor to be a part of it."

Street parking will be available during evening market hours. "Expect to shop from a variety of vendors, listen to local musicians, and grab your favorite eats from a few food trucks," YLNI said in the announcement.

YLNI continues its market from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays from May 6 through Sept. 30 on Barr Street. The market puts emphasis on local vendors, who offer produce, baked goods, crafts, jewelry, honey and more.
