Doing Good: Asia
When Asia had a few days off from school, she decided to add a couple of volunteering opportunities to her schedule. Her mom and dad came along on the first day, and she even brought a friend to help out on her second outing. Want to hear about her greatest takeaways from the two-day journey into volunteerism?
She'll tell you all about it in our latest episode of Doing Good!

Williams-Woodland Park Historic District has a Holiday Home Tour that gives residents of Fort Wayne the opportunity to walk through a number of historic homes built at the turn of the 20th century. They rely on this home tour to generate revenue for the many programs, social activities, and civic engagement programs they operate each year that makes this neighborhood special.
The association pivoted from an in-person tour to a virtual tour and invited us to come alongside them to produce a number of videos telling stories, highlighting homes, and giving historic perspective to some of the iconic buildings in the area.
Here is a sneak peak. Follow their page to see the launch of all the content this weekend. The planning team has gone above and beyond to create an immersive and thorough online experience.

We were thrilled to work with Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana to give a glimpse into how they're navigated COVID-19 and ensuring that "Girl Scouts Is Not Canceled." They provide a fantastic opportunity for young women to be in community, learn together, and become leaders in our community.
Thank you to Neighborlink Fort Wayne for their help on this project!

We created this 30 minute mini-documentary style video that premiered last Saturday evening to tie together the Complex project types the neighbors we introduced you to all of last week, and to give you insights on all that's going through a conversation with NeighborLink Fort Wayne Board President and co-founder, John Barce, and our Executive Director, Andrew Hoffman.
In light of a gala style event, we've gone all in with mailers and digital video content to try to reach our audience. If you want to learn more about what's going on at NL these days and why it matters, find time to give this video a watch all the way through. If something resonates, give me a call and I'd love to answer any questions and brainstorm how we can partner.

We're excited to be partnering with the NIDAC on this project. We love meeting new people, hearing their stories, and doing our best to translate that into content that introduces them to our greater community.
We invite you to follow their page, get to know these incredible people, and learn more about the work the coalition members are doing throughout Allen County.
Halie Brown first visited Turnstone Center for Children and Adults with Disabilities as a preschooler. Her parents saw the value in the physical, occupational, and speech therapy classes they offered and enrolled her in each one. Their goal was to empower Halie from a young age to overcome the hurdles that would eventually appear in life— especially as she prepared to enter public school for the first time. Little did they know how soon those hurdles would reveal themselves.
“The environment and culture [outside of Turnstone] were not accepting— especially in the public school system. I had death threats, I was teased, I was tormented, and things were thrown at me because [of my Cerebral Palsy].” As a result, Halie spent the next few years in utter seclusion, completely isolated from children her own age.
As difficult as elementary and middle school were, Halie never forgot the lessons she learned at Turnstone. In many ways, they were the glue that held her together emotionally. And so, when high school arrived and the hurdles only increased, she returned to the place where much of her foundational core was formed and strengthened. Halie spent the next few summers volunteering in Turnstone’s adult day program. “As soon as I walked in, I was on level playing ground. I was accepted and welcomed. There was no harshness, no exclusion. That’s something I took with me throughout the rest of my school years.”
What she experienced — first as a client and then as a volunteer — made a lasting impression on her. As an adult, Halie dreamed of returning to Turnstone once more; not as a client or volunteer, but as an employee. When she summoned the courage to apply, the good news came shortly thereafter. “Coming here, I was welcomed. I was given the opportunity to flourish. Without Turnstone I wouldn’t have the confidence in my abilities. It’s because of the skills that I learned [here as a child] and the adaptations that Turnstone taught me.”
More than six years after her first day on the job, Halie still comes to work full of joy and purpose. How could she not, when Turnstone has been a constant foundation of support throughout her entire life? As an administrative assistant — and one of the first faces that clients and visitors see upon entry to the Plassman Athletic Center — Halie knows she is exactly where she is supposed to be. One of her greatest strengths is the empathy she feels for each child and adult who walks through the doors for the very first — or five-hundredth — time. In them, she sees her younger self and knows exactly where they’ve been. Because of that, she also knows precisely what they need to hear:
“When people come in these doors, they don’t have a disability anymore. They can just be themselves and let their guard down.”

Relationships between neighbors and volunteers is what NeighborLink Fort Wayne is all about. The projects are just the connector to one another.
After a failed operation claimed his eyesight a few years ago, Art quickly found himself trapped within a darkness that relegated all color to memory. After a lifetime of fearless optimism, he found it difficult to sever his connection with color and the beauty of the world around him.
Suddenly, tasks that had always been simple for Art were overly complex, if not impossible. It did not take long to understand that help was needed; especially since there was household work to get done and no one to do it. That was when he called NeighborLink. What started as a single household project soon became two, then three, and quite a few more. Before he knew it, a connection had formed between Art and the devoted volunteers who regularly made time to assist him in his complex time of need. Soon enough, the connection the men shared was more than just a passing acquaintance. It had become a brotherhood of sorts; a colorful friendship that was unexpected and irreplaceable.

Our team has been hard at work for the past few weeks getting content ready for 6 days of fundraising campaign videos, culminating in a 30min mini-documentary for NeighborLink Fort Wayne.
We have a goal of raising $25,000, which will be matched dollar for dollar if we're successful. Don't get to $25,000, we don't get a match. A sizable incentive to do our best to tell our story of how complex our work has gotten in a compelling way.

At this time last year, NeighborLink Fort Wayne was deep in our campaign to raise awareness and sell tickets for their fundraiser, which was a concert with Addison Agen and the The Legendary Trainhoppers. We worked on a multi-media campaign to boost engagement on that video.
We decided to have a little fun and see if we could create our own version of carpool karaoke we called, Ridealong. This was such a fun project to work on. From getting to know Addison better to driving a brand new Volkswagen Atlas from Vorderman Volkswagen to getting stranded at the end by Addison.
We've got Lake Street Dive still stuck in our heads.

Neighboring Productions thrives at telling stories like this one. We appreciate each opportunity to sit with neighbors, hear their stories, and try to celebrate those that are journeying with them during their life's circumstances.
Art lost his sight after a post-surgery infection left him blind. While most people would find such news completely devastating, Art learned to cope and move forward thanks to his faith and the encouraging people in his life.
However, adjusting to a life without sight was far from easy. Simple tasks - such as fixing his damaged fence, repairing his floor, and figuring out what was wrong with his malfunctioning oven - were now impossible without someone else to help.
After his girlfriend found out about NeighborLink at the beginning of 2018, Art's life completely changed...but not in the way he ever expected.
This is Art's story.

Naomi King is a working mom with five kids. Her children are her world. Nearly twenty years ago, she moved back to the neighborhood of her youth and has since become a pillar of her community. About a decade after moving in, the historic home she had built her family’s life around showed signs of degradation. Numerous repairs have been made throughout the years but the roof has consistently gotten worse. Currently, she fears for more than just its sound structure.
Saving up for a $12,000 roof on a teaching assistant salary with five kids and one in college is simply impossible.
NeighborLink has been working with Naomi and has her approved to receive a Community Development Block Grant for $7,500 from the City of Fort Wayne, which covers a large percentage of the roof budget, but not all of it. We're still needing to raise $4,800 to cover the rest of the cost.

Ryan Taylor is the Executive Director of the Network Coffee House and the pastor of St James Urban Church in Denver, CO. Network is a ministry that exists to create a place for long-term redemptive relationships with the unhoused neighbors of Denver and believes that chronic homelessness is largely a product of the way people bond or attach. Network creates a "living room" where unhoused neighbors have a place to relax, shower, use a bathroom, or have a cup of coffee. It's also where those that want to serve or befriend those unhoused can come play chess, talk about sports, or anything else that people getting to know each other talk about as they build trust with one another.
Ryan has been on a 17+ year journey moving closer and closer to the margins and standing with the vulnerable. This is a conversation of what he's learning, what it looks like to step in and commit to deeper diverse relationships, what happens as you do, and ways he can encourage us all to move closer to our neighbor.

Aaron & Janell Lane are a couple that is driven and called to reinvest in the southeast side of Fort Wayne, where they grew up in, by leading a movement to ignite a ripple of change through investing in key members of the community. Janell and Aaron created the Community Partner Development Center a few years ago, which is an innovative, proactive way to impact community healthcare by investing in community members and leaders on the front end. They also co-founded Courageous Healing, Inc. together and lend their time to many other initiatives.
These leaders, in turn, continue to invest in others. They believe that if people are taking a more “wellness-centered” approach and focusing on living a healthier lifestyle, making healthier decisions and self-care, it leads to a win-win situation for all involved. They are making an impact in a short period of time through their care, passion, and using their professional backgrounds in mental health counseling and organizational leadership to invest in their neighbors.

Neighboring Productions exists to explore what it means to be a neighbor in today’s society through conversations with people we see being good neighbors in a wide variety of settings.
We tell the stories of the neighbors we see just below the surface that are living life with intention, are thoughtful of those around them, and are doing small things that change their neighborhoods. We explore what being a neighbor means to them, what’s shaped their worldview, and what their thoughts are on what it takes to be a good neighbor.
We create short films, podcasts, and creative content for nonprofits, small businesses, and community organizations looking to humanize their work in a digital age.

The first step in loving our neighbors is to know our neighbors. One of the best ways to know them is by listening to their stories. Stories are the threads that connect all of us to each other.
Neighboring Productions began as a natural offshoot of our continuous work to connect neighbors in need with neighbors who can help at NeighborLink Fort Wayne. Our mission of practical, neighbor-to-neighbor expressions of God’s love drives us to make such connections.
By providing a platform which allows our neighbors to seek assistance and share their individual stories with those who are able to help, we have created a powerful way to humanize our work. Video is the easiest and best format to do just that. For the last ten years, NeighborLink has been dedicated to the art of digital storytelling to educate, train, promote, and shatter barriers between neighbors for the sake of neighborhood and community development. We will continue to pour our hearts into this creative means of expression as it has always proven effective.
Since 2005, we’ve learned how non-profits function and grow, how they are funded, and how to craft a voice that audiences listen to. At Neighboring Productions, our commitment is to share what we’ve learned through the years with the art of video production and digital communication consulting by helping our peers in the non-profit sector tell their stories in compelling, visual ways.
Give us a call or send us an email if you’d like to learn more about how we can best serve you.
