Big congratulations to our colleague, Karen Cariani, on receiving the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers - SMPTE James A. Linder Archival Technology Medal! We are so honored to be working with her on the massive opportunity with American Archive of Public Broadcasting!

This year Karen will be honored in recognition of her pioneering contributions to advancing technology, techniques, workflows, and infrastructure for preserving and providing access to the public broadcasting archives in the U.S.

3. Many people guessed this was a u-matic, which is technically correct! But this particular tape was designed to record digital audio, and is called PCM 1630
4. 9-track data tape
5. Audograph (this was blank!)
6. DASH tape (48 track)

Ampex's "The Tape Behind the Olympics" was "formulated to optimize the performance of Sony
BVU recorders" according to an IEEE newsletter from the
125th SMPTE Technical Conference in 1983. The 196 model was the 1" Type C version of this u-matic.

Our audio engineers are tops in their field, regularly refreshing their skills with new sound projects. Our Chief Audio Engineer Jon Smeltz took this photo touring with The Roots at the Hollywood Bowl on Saturday, June 29.

The Registrar's Department had the pleasure of visiting the Wharton Esherick Museum a few weeks ago to look at their media and get a tour of the museum. The museum has received grant funding to digitize their audiovisual media, including the only known moving image footage of Wharton Esherick on 8mm film!

Congratulations to Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival for preserving their entire audiovisual archive thanks to NEH funding. Digital Archivist Sumi Matsumoto poses with a van loaded with their original media last Monday, June 24.

During the final weeks of September, our employees participated in a food drive to benefit our neighbors at the Mattie N. Dixon Community Food Cupboard! It brings us great joy anytime we are able to help members of our own community!

One last post from the A Century of 16mm conference: a Kemco HoMovie projector in action. This system took four images within the space of a typical 16mm frame in an attempt to make the footage go further. While inventive, the projector is very loud (sound on) and required customers to purhcase specific equipment (camera and projector).
