Milton is now heading out into the Atlantic Ocean as a Category 1 hurricane, having completed its swing across Florida.

The eye of the storm is now passing past Cape Canaveral, having taken less than eight hours to make its way across the Florida peninsula.

All eyes in Hurricane Milton!

JUST IN: Milton was upgraded from a tropical storm to a hurricane Sunday as it churned in the Gulf of Mexico on a path to slam Florida's west coast later this week, as areas devastated by Hurricane Helene race to clear debris ahead of the new storm, officials said.

The National Hurricane Center forecast currently has Milton reaching Category 3 hurricane status late Monday.

Absences and tardies by those who decided to evacuate or commute from areas affected by Hurricane Helene will be excused. Please follow your school's protocol for excused absences and tardies. The 1pm update on Hurricane Helene has it still at a Cat 2 with 110 maximum sustained winds. Moving NNE at 16mph and about 230 miles South of Apalachicola. Still projected for the Big Bend area this evening. We'll have a full update at 4pm.
