Back in Okinawa in 2008 I was on the flightline working long hours on C-130s juggling three radios and three AMUs dealing with nonstop pressure and heat while trying to keep support equipment running. On the outside I was functioning but on the inside I was falling apart. I was halfway through my enlistment and completely lost. Homesick isolated drinking too much gaming too much gaining weight and losing myself little by little. I was spiraling and didn’t even realize how bad it had gotten.
Then my supervisor stepped in and he didn’t do it with a lecture or paperwork. He did it with real leadership. He showed up with food on the flightline. He checked in on us. He smiled. He treated us like people not numbers. He made us feel like we mattered. That man saved my life and he probably never knew it at the time.
Fast forward to my retirement last February and he flew all the way to Florida just to surprise me. That’s the kind of leader he has always been.
Now years later both of us are online talking openly about veteran mental health because this story isn’t just mine. A lot of us have been there even if we never said it out loud.
If you’re struggling I want you to know you’re not alone. And if you’re looking for someone worth following someone who leads with heart and integrity follow him. He’s the real deal.
