Tuttle’s TBI Recovery

Tuttle’s TBI Recovery On 4/2/24, our son, Nick Tuttle (JR) was in a horrible car accident, which left him with a grade 2 DAI.

We are using this page as a central location to keep everyone updated during his recovery/rehab.

Family appreciation lunch at the USO San Antonio

I moved to say how much I appreciate our family who we are away from. Lena and Armani are supporting us from afar. Lena works incredibly hard to manage our home, business, and kids lives on her own. Also supporting me with anything that I need while I’m caring for JR. She’s an amazing wife and the best mom to our kids. I’m so thankful for her and our family. ♥️

JR and I visited The Alamo a while back when we had a cooler day during the summertime. Since the weather here in San Antonio has been giving us a little bit of a break and Nick has been a whole lot more mobile without the help of any assistive devices for a while we spent the last couple of weekends visiting the other missions here.

So Lena told me to make sure I took some “before” pics of JR when he got out of inpatient care. He left in patient on 7/18. The before pics were taken on 7/21. The follow up pics were taken on 9/29. It’s hard for me to see all of the progress he is making seeing him everyday, but when I took the latest pictures I was amazed at how much he has changed.

Nick has been putting in tons of hard work to get heal and get stronger. We are so proud of him.

A heartfelt message from the man himself. 🤣 TBH we had a whole message planned out, but Nick (in true fashion) said what he wanted to say.So, that being said, thank you guys for all of the continued support. It’s appreciated. 🙏🏼

Had a great visit with one of Nick’s shipmates from his previous command on the USS George Washington. Bryan came to see JR when he was still in the hospital at BAMC. He says that he’s blown away at the difference of how much improvement Nick has made compared to a few months ago. Nick was really happy to get to visit with his friend.

The weather here in San Antonio was super nice yesterday, so JR and I took advantage of it and went downtown to see the Alamo. The afternoon wasn’t complete without barbacoa tacos and a Big Red. Later we had a grocery pick-up and had some time to kill. So Nick got some driving lessons with the E-cart at Walmart 😆. There were no casualties 😮‍💨.

Fun in the sun, toes in the sand. 🏖️

JR and I took a little road trip out to Corpus Christi yesterday to get the heck out of San Antonio. We both needed a change of scenery. Nick had a great time taking a dip in water. He laughed unreasonably hard at the waves pushing him down. 😂 Since his injury his balance has been a little sketchy. Being weightless in the water appeared to give him a little confidence to move around more, but he was no match for the waves 🌊 😆. He had so much fun having the waves crash over him.

We topped the day off with some dinner at P.F. Changs. A great day of R&R for us.

I want to share a little something about the unsung hero who is behind the scenes while I’m here with Nick. While I appreciate the accolades for taking care of JR, my wife Lena deserves so much more of the credit. She stepped up to the plate 10 years ago to be a mom for our boys. On paper her title is step-mom, but she’s always been the real mom the boys needed and could always depend on. Since JR got injured she has been the real strength holding everything together. I know that I’m here with Nick caring for him daily, but I wouldn’t be able to do any of this were it not for her.

While I’m here she is taking care of our 2 kids still at home, Armani and Kai. Taking care of our home as a single parent. Taking over all of my share of the household responsibilities as well as her own. Making sure our business keeps running to pay the bills, and part of that is making product to send to me to work with as well. She is working double duty on all fronts. She has done all of this and more at the cost of her own sleep and well being.

Even though she has this extra load upon her she still makes sure to send me items I need here, thinks of things that can help Nick and I, does everything she can to support us here, and even has made trips to visit us with kids in tow. One of those trips being to Honolulu! Not the Hawaiian vacation she wanted for sure. She understands how important seeing her and the kids is to me, and has made it happen. She is truly self-less. She amazes me at what she can do everyday. Without her none of this would be possible.

Thank you so much Lena for loving and caring for our family. I can’t describe how grateful I am. ❤️

A little JR photo dump

Nick is doing so good. He really shows small improvements daily. While we’ve got a long road ahead, he’s tracking in a good direction of recovery. One thing about him these days is that he’s almost always happy.

Thank you guys for all of the love and support you’ve thrown our way.

We still have items in the Amazon Wishlist that can be found in the bio. It’s items for Nick and household goods to help us make our barracks a little more home.

The other day one of JR’s old shipmates, Dave, from his first duty station reached out to us to let us know he was in the area for some training. Nick really enjoyed seeing a familiar face. We had a great visit.

For the last few days JR has been asking to help me cook dinner. So the other night I cut up some broccoli to saute. He did a great job putting his cooking skills back to the test, safely sifting it around the pan for a few minutes. He really wants to help around the barracks as much as he can.

Jr. and I visited one of the USO locations on base yesterday morning. They had a small room with some instruments in it. Looks like he’s still got it. 🎸
