19th Century New Orleans Photography: A Legacy of Visual Immortality
Lot #10 at The Full Monty Oddities Auction and Live Sale on February 22nd.
In 1840, free man of color Jules Lion introduced the daguerreotype to New Orleans, sparking a passion for photography in the city. By the outbreak of the Civil War, newer processes like ambrotypes and tintypes had emerged, offering cheaper and more durable alternatives. New Orleans became a hub of Civil War photography, with numerous photographers capturing the images of Confederate soldiers before they went off to battle. Some photographers, like Mrs. E. Beachbard, even joined the troops, documenting the war firsthand.

These "immortal pictures" provided a lasting record of the soldiers and their sacrifices, and stand as a testament to the artistry and innovation of New Orleans photographers during this pivotal period in American history.
