Our Black and Turkey vultures are common sights in Florida skies.
An adult Black Vulture on the left and a juvenile on the right. Note the black colors, the wrinkled head of the adult, and the tiny feathers and lack of wrinkles on the head of the juvenile.
The Black Vulture is a permanent resident and doesn't migrate. In flight it flaps often and soars with its wings held straight out. It has black feathers, a black head and bill, white tips on its wings, and a relatively short tail (note how far its legs extend under the tail). Some of our Turkey Vultures are also resident, but others migrate to Florida in winter. In flight a Turkey Vulture sails effortlessly with its wings held in a V and its head low.
A Turkey Vulture adult has brown feathers, gray lining to the underside of its wings, a red head, white bill, and a relatively long tail.

Millions of Floridians took Thursday to survey the damage of their homes and businesses. The storm's strong winds knocked out power throughout large swaths of coastal and central Florida, leaving about 3 million customers without electricity as of late Thursday afternoon.
🔗

More than 3 million Floridians were without power after Milton. In some areas like Siesta Key, damage was severe. In Sarasota, many residents were thankful things were not worse.

While there has been significant flooding along the coast — and hundreds of thousands of people remain without power — Milton did not turn out to be as damaging as projections showed as it approached the peninsula. On today’s Gulf Coast Life, we debrief the storm with a meteorologist with the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network. We also check in with someone from Sarasota County, where Milton made landfall. And we check in with FPL and LCEC to see how their power systems fared and how many people are still without power.

Hurricane Milton made landfall on Wednesday night around 8:30 p.m. as a Category 3 storm with maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour near Siesta Key in Sarasota County. Milton spawned scores of tornadoes left more than 3 million utility customers without power. The AP reports at least five pe...

🚧 Thursday Traffic & Road Safety Update 🚧

🌉 Fort Myers Beach: Matanzas Pass Bridge reopens at 12 p.m. for residents and owners only. Debris removal crews are out clearing the roads—please drive cautiously and at your own risk. Contractors are not allowed on the island at this time.

🚨 Sanibel Island: Significant flooding reported with over 3 feet of water on roadways. A 24-hour curfew is in place. Only first responders and essential personnel are allowed access. If you're still on the island, please shelter in place—roads are unsafe for travel.

⚠️ Lee County: Many traffic signals are out. Treat non-functioning signals as stop signs, and flashing lights with caution. Follow law enforcement directions when present. Avoid driving through standing water. Lee DOT is working to restore signals and clear roads across the county.

🌪️ Charlotte County: Emergency response has resumed. However, downed power lines, debris, and non-functioning stop signs make post-storm travel extremely dangerous. Stay off the roads until further notice to let first responders make them safe.

🚗 Marco Island: Roads are now passable, and the vehicle curfew has been lifted. However, 68% of the island remains without power, and some side streets have saltwater flooding. Drive with caution.

🔌 Bonita Springs: Severe road damage from downed trees, power lines, and debris—Hickory Boulevard is impassible. Please stay off the roads and allow crews to assess the damage.

🌉 Tampa Area Bridges: Skyway, Howard Frankland, Gandy, and Courtney Campbell bridges are all OPEN.

With more than 80,000 customers currently without power across Cape Coral due to Hurricane Milton, the City of Cape Coral is actively working with LCEC to help restore services. In the meantime, if you're using a generator, please follow these safety tips:
Always use generators outside, at least 20 feet from your home.
Never connect them directly to home outlets.
Keep children at least 6 feet away from generators.
Ensure your generator is properly grounded to prevent electrocution.
Use heavy-duty, outdoor-rated extension cords.
Stay safe and informed as we work together to restore power.

We are once again reminding you that if you encounter a traffic signal that isn't working to treat it like a four-way stop.
If you do not need to be on the roads, please stay home. Workers and deputies are out cleaning up roads and fixing power lines, traffic signals and everything else that may have been affected by the storm.
