You don’t come across too many high fantasy features at film festivals because it’s a difficult genre to successfully execute even with Hollywood money, much less “underground” money, but Maddalena Kingsley and her Southwest Florida production team Random Magic put together an impressive effort with “Psyche.” Rooted primarily in Ancient Greek mythology but set in its own universe with production design perhaps a little reminiscent of “Bridgerton” or a Disney fairy tale, it follows the story of Psyche (the goddess of the soul for which all things “psych” come from) as she is confronted by the jealous Aphrodite in what becomes a battle of immortal powers. “Psyche” plays on Sunday, 12/8 at 11:10 AM, at Tampa Bay Underground Film Festival 2024, presented by Patriot Auto Glass.

Catch She Loves Me, She Loves Me Not during the Saturday Funhouse comedy shorts block, on, 12/7 at 1 PM at the Tampa Bay Underground Film Festival

We just went through a lot of wrenching drama for this coming Saturday, so let’s lighten the mood a little with the Saturday Funhouse comedy shorts block, which is 1 week from today, 12/7 at 1 PM. The lineup includes the latest from some of TBUFF’s masters of laughter such as TL Westgate, Christian Cashmir and the outrageous Tyler Council, as well as other longtime regulars with some comedic films every now-and-then such as Rory Smith and Austin Janowsky, and a number of relative TBUFF newbies who have given us “She Loves Me, She Loves Me Not,” “Tatiana’s Truth” and New York import “Puppy Love.” We’ve also got several borderline comedic epics in “The Legend of Skunk Ape,” “Cracked: The Last Egg-Stravaganza” and one of this year’s big musicals “Together Forever” – last year TBUFF solidified the latest comeback of that genre by crowning a much more dramatic musical as Best Overall Florida Short. Finally we come to the 4th of 5 films to play by this year’s TBUFF king Joe Boi, “The Art of Sneakiness,” which is the only one that can in no way qualify as horror. Get ready to wet your pants, even if it’s just because you spilled your drink on them, next Saturday at 1PM at Tampa Bay Underground Film Festival presented by Patriot Auto Glass.

And don't worry, if you this miss this block, we've more comedy to tell you about tomorrow for 12/8!

Catch Father Nose Best and Trendsetters during the Divine Comedies block, Sunday at 3PM at TBUFF

Divine Comedies on Sunday 12/8 at 3:05 PM is pretty much the clown car of blocks... literally in the case of member “Father Nose Best,” a short about a family of clowns that starts off with a car. It gets sillier from there, perhaps none more than “Cheese Puff Smoothie,” which lives up to its delicious title. Also in the laughter lineup is “Chaperone,” “Method Actor,” “Once Upon a Valentime,” “Trendsetters,” “No Solicitation” and “In the Garage.” And then there’s “ ” starring 2023 Best Supporting Actor winner David McMahon as a therapist? Consultant? Motivator? Well, whatever he is, he meets his match, and you may also need a therapist after watching. Divine Comedies will tickle your funny bone a week from today, 12/8, at Tampa Bay Underground Film Festival, presented by Patriot Auto Glass.
