📍KINGSTON, JAMAICA — U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has sought to ease concerns among Jamaicans living in the United States, stating that law-abiding green card holders and visa holders have “nothing to fear” amid heightened immigration enforcement.
Speaking at a press conference in Kingston during his recent Caribbean tour, Rubio addressed anxieties from the Jamaican diaspora over possible deportations under the Trump administration’s immigration stance.
“If you’re a green card holder and you’re not any of these things [criminal or national security threats], you’re going to be fine,” Rubio assured, emphasizing that deportation efforts will focus on individuals involved in criminal activity or who pose risks to public safety.
Rubio also noted that Jamaica is not a major contributor to unauthorized U.S. migration. “It’s not even in the top 10 or top 20,” he said, while reiterating that visa abuse and violence will result in removal.
His comments come as many Caribbean immigrants in the U.S. express concern over the administration’s increasingly strict policies on immigration and deportation.
