King Ramesses III crushing an enemy

New Kingdom, 20th Dynasty, ca. 1186-1155 BC.
From Deir el-Medina, Thebes.
Now in the Egyptian Museum of Turin. S. 6279

One of the most typical royal scenes is reproduced on this illustrated ostracon, king Ramesses III in the act of crushing the defeated enemy. The scene was widely used on pylons and external walls of temples.

On this piece the king is shown upright, his head adorned with red crown topped by the two feathers and the ram’s horn; leaning forward, he grasps the tightly bound arms of a kneeling Nubian captive with both hands.

Ptah from the Tomb of Tutankhamun (KV62), Valley of the Kings, West Thebes.
Now in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo. JE 60739

This gilded statue depicts Ptah, the divine patron of craftsmen and artists and lord of creation at Memphis. Twenty-eight wooden statues of deities, wrapped in linen, were found in black-painted shrines. Their purpose was to protect the king during his journey in the underworld.

The gilded statue of Ptah wears a robe, richly ornamented with feathers, and a broad necklace. A blue faïence skullcap covers his head, and the eyes and eyebrows are inlaid with faïence and stone. Ptah holds a composite staff made up of a “Was” sceptre, a Djed pillar, and an Ankh sign.

Model of a Soul House and Garden
Middle Kingdom, 12th Dynasty, c. 1981-1975 BC.
From the Tomb of Meketre (TT280), Sheikh Abd el-Qurna, West Thebes. Now in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo. JE 46721

This model shows the facade of a soul house with a portico, or covered entrance, that is supported by two rows of four columns in the form of bound lotus flowers and stems.

The well-preserved colours of these columns range from white and yellow to blue, while the capitals are painted in green and red. In front of the portico, there is a rectangular lake painted blue, surrounded on three sides by sycamore trees with abundant leaves and fruits, which are similar to figs.

The gold mask of Tutankhamun on display in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo. JE 60672, upper floor.

The mask of Tutankhamun is an example of the highest artistic and technical achievements of the ancient Egyptians in the New Kingdom. The exact portrayal of the king’s facial features achieved here made it possible for his soul to recognize him and return to his mummified body. Thus ensuring his resurrection.

After being buried for over 3,000 years, it was excavated by Howard Carter in 1925 from tomb KV62 in the Valley of the Kings. Covering the head of the wrapped mummy in its coffin and activated by a magical spell, no.151b from the Book of the Dead, the mask ensured more protection for the king’s body.

On his brow is the kingly uraeus: the Wadjet or rearing cobra, representing Lower Egypt, combined with the vulture Nekhbet of Upper Egypt.

The combination of the two is symbolic of his domination of both lands. That is strikingly similar to the Narmer Palette"s message of control of both halves of Egypt.

A fabric womb made by Angélique du Coudray, a French midwife who was commissioned by King Louis XV to reduce infant mortality. From 1760 to 1783, she traveled all over France, visiting poor rural women and sharing her extensive knowledge with them. It is estimated that she trained some 10,000 women.
Du Coudray also invented the first lifesize obstetrical mannequin, for practicing mock births, and published a well-received midwifery textbook

Limestone seated figure of Senebef
Middle Kingdom-Second Intermediate Period, Early (?) 13th Dynasty, c. 1803-1788 B.C.
Abydos. British Museum. EA2307

This seated limestone statuette of “overseer of the ointments” Senebef is believed to date from the Early 13th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt’s Middle Kingdom. The structure of the face and enlarged ears are a distinctive style of the era it is thought to be from.

Senebef wears a shoulder-length wig of plaited hair tucked behind his overly large ears. He stares forth with an ever so slight smile. His deep inset eyes are lined, his nose is thin and his lips also.

Senebef wears a garment wrapped around his torso from under his pectoral, his belly is slightly rounded.

Takabuti was a young Theban woman who died in her twenties or early thirties towards the end of Ancient Egypt’s 25th Dynasty, c. 755-656 B.C.

The daughter of a Priest of Amun named Nespara and a woman named Tasenirit, Takabuti is believed to have been a married woman who lived and died in Thebes. She held two known titles, both of which were written upon her coffin in hieroglyphs; “Mistress of a Great House” and “Noblewoman”.

Upon the 185th anniversary of the unwrapping of Takabuti’s mummy, results of a modern study of Takabuti’s remains were published to the public. These tests of which Takabuti’s remains underwent included x-rays, C.T. scanning, hair analysis and radio carbon dating. The varied tests and their results revealed fascinating insight into Takabuti’s physical health which also revealed peculiar oddities about her too. All the while, they finally certified how Takabuti had come to her death.

Mentuemhat in his robes as a priest of Amun and carrying the wand used to consecrate food offerings to the god. Raised relief in the style of his time, but showing some influence of Middle Kingdom work.

Mentuemhat’s power over Thebes likely is what inspired him to portray himself as a king in his statuary, like he was king of Egypt—and in the case of Upper Egypt, he de facto was.

Montuemhat’s father Nesptah passed on the position of Mayor of Thebes to his nephew Remmakheru and later to Mentuemhat himself. He served during the reigns of Taharqa and Psamtik I, which cover parts of the 25th Dynasty of Egypt and 26th Dynasty of Egypt.

Late Period, 26th Dynasty, ca. 664-525 BC.
