Today, November 8th, we commemorate Intersex Day of Remembrance and honor the life of Herculine Barbin, a 19th-century French intersex writer whose experiences still resonate with many today.

Born in 1838, Barbin was assigned female at birth and raised in a convent. However, later in life, a medical examination led to her being legally reclassified as male. She adopted the name Abel and faced immense challenges adapting to a new identity in a society that struggled to understand intersex individuals.

Barbin's story highlights the ongoing struggles intersex people face:
• Lack of bodily autonomy
• Non-consensual medical interventions
• Social stigma and discrimination
• Pressure to conform to binary gender norms

Even today, many intersex individuals experience similar challenges. This day serves as a reminder that we must continue to fight for intersex rights, including the right to self-determination, bodily integrity, and freedom from discrimination.

Let's use Barbin's story to educate ourselves and others about intersex experiences. By fostering understanding and acceptance, we can create a more inclusive world for all gender identities.

I don’t talk about this openly very much, but today feels like one of those times where the f*cks have absolutely flown out the window. I want to share something real with you all.

I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was just seven years old.

Back then, the school threatened to expel me unless I took medication, so I did.

But the meds turned me into a zombie. I couldn’t feel anything, so I started hiding them and learned how to mask instead.

That masking?

It dimmed my sparkle, dulled my shine, and forced me to shut down some of the best parts of who I am.

For a long time, I refused to accept that ADHD was part of me, because the way it was portrayed everywhere was negative and isolating.

So, I threw myself into helping others, thinking that if I focused on them, maybe I wouldn’t have to face my own challenges.

Fast forward to the pandemic—endless scrolling, hours of reflection, shadow prompts, therapy, and self-discovery—and it finally hit me: I am ADHD.

And, oh yeah, there’s a solid chance I’m autistic too.

Watching the two pieces of me fit together in ways that make sense has been an emotional rollercoaster.

It's exhausting, to say the least, but also liberating.

Throw q***r, non-binary and a variety of other marginalized identities in there and it can feel pretty unsafe right now.

And now, here’s what I have to say, unapologetically:

If you don’t understand why your trans, q***r, neurodivergent, disabled, Black, Brown, Jewish, Latin, gay, immigrant, or female friends are scared, then you don’t really know a friend. You know a person.

True friendship means hearing, understanding, and standing with someone in their full humanity.

It means recognizing the weight of the world that some of us carry just because of who we are.

It means embracing the fear and pain, not running from it or pretending it doesn’t exist.

The world may feel overwhelming at times, but we find strength in each other.

And when we listen with empathy, when we act with kindness, we start to break down the barriers that divide us.

Let’s be the kind of people who show up with love, understanding, and resilience.
