Why it matters: Most polls before last Tuesday’s debate that saw Harris rattle Trump on a range of topics had the pair locked in a virtual dead heat.

Driving the news: Morning Consult pollsters surveyed 11,022 likely U.S. voters from Sept. 13-15 in the poll, which had an unweighted margin of error of +/-1 percentage point.

A North Carolina man armed with a semi-automatic rifle may have been lying in wait for Donald Trump for more than 11 hours at a Florida golf course where the former president was playing Sunday before being hastily evacuated, according to federal officials.

While the FBI said that they were investigating the event as an apparent assassination attempt, the initial criminal counts against Ryan Routh were limited to the gun charges. A grand jury indictment is typically required before the case can proceed, which prosecutors often use to add additional counts.

Routh did not appear to have fired the rifle he allegedly pointed near shrubbery where Trump was playing, said Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg. But even if Routh didn’t fire his weapon, he could still face an attempted assassination charge, although authorities may want to investigate further to find more evidence of his intent.
