The first episode of the Infrastructure Technology Podcast is finally here!
In its inaugural episode, the ITP takes a deep dive into the supply chain, particularly its evolution and importance in sectors like transportation and construction. Hosts Gavin Jenkins, Brandon Lewis and Harlee Hewitt introduce themselves and share their excitement about launching the podcast. They briefly talk about how they began thinking more about the supply chain, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Guest Gary Smith, a supply chain expert with 40 years of experience, provides insights into the evolution of the supply chain, starting from its early days as "physical distribution", to its modern form influenced by technology like AI and RFID. He explains how the supply chain has become essential in competitive industries, particularly mass transit and construction.

Smith shares how events like the COVID-19 pandemic and disruptions like the key bridge collapse in Baltimore highlight the fragility of supply chains. He emphasizes the need for visibility across the entire supply chain to handle disruptions and manage risks.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority - MTA has purchased 265 new zero-emission buses that will operate on routes across the city. This purchase builds on the 60 zero-emission buses that came last year and is in addition to the 205 zero-emission buses slated to come beginning later this year.
These new 40-foot buses will help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by upwards of 90 metric tons annually per bus. They feature lightweight electric traction drive systems that allow buses to recover up to 90 percent of energy during braking. Regenerative braking reduces wear and tear on brakes and maximizes energy efficiency.

CapMetro is taking an equitable approach to distributing bus stop amenities.
The agency’s community-guided board policy utilizes a database that leverages available resources to support the implementation of more amenities and shelters across the city. CapMetro had limited funding for additional infrastructure improvements needed before installing amenities. The agency expanded its database, built an Airtable to track all the happenings at every stop to help identify opportunities to leverage funding from adjacent infrastructure projects, new developments or new transit services near a bus stop in need of a shelter. This strategic maneuver brought down the upfront project costs and effectively used resources so that more shelters could be installed.
