In 1996, I found myself suddenly without a job when the International Dept. of a company I represented for Spanish-speaking clients was “canceled.” With little time to spare, being responsible for a family of five- two horses and three dogs, I needed to come up quickly with some way to earn an income to provide for us. My skill set is sales, marketing and writing. Well, Durango is a year-round tou
rist town with top-tier restaurants … so why not create a “Menu Guide?” - an informative, quality magazine available free in multiple locations, giving people a convenient way to choose a restaurant. Ads purchased by the restaurants describing their cuisine with selected menu choices would attract visitors, newcomers and even residents. Despite my lack of any experience in this area, the first “round” of magazines was a success – from there, the business and I grew together! When I returned to Wisconsin in 2012, I brought this business concept along, with a name change (“Cottonwood” replacing “Coyote” Creek) and a “brand” subtitle – Flavors and Favorites – to accommodate not only restaurants and food-related clients, but also other retail or home-based businesses who found this kind of promotion helpful. We are a small “team” of professional women dedicated to creating top-quality, interesting magazines full of local information touching on the history, the people and the fascinating stories of these communities we serve and live in. Stunning photography and elegant design keep you turning the pages. Business owners are showcased, and non-profits are invited to tell their stories at no cost.
