Mikey Votano is a musician and entertainer from Sydney. His partner Kathryn Relf is in the UK.

"We both work on cruise ships and have been together five years. Our pre-Covid life was spent between Australia and Britain, but Kathryn and I were separated at the start of the pandemic and haven't been able to see each other since," he says.

"We've requested for her to join me here in Australia, but all the requests have been denied. We've paid a ridiculous amount for lawyers to try and get a visa for Kathryn to come to Australia, but are still waiting to hear."

"I've had offers to do work in Europe but until recently hadn't been able to get vaccinated. I just had my first dose of Pfizer last week.

"There's work booked in Europe for June 2022, which will be my first contract in two-and-a-half years. But with the border closures and flight costs I have no guarantee I'll be able to leave.

"The lockdowns in Australia have devastated the entertainment industry. Many artists, including myself, were denied welfare support."

The stranded Australian
Rachael Marciniak, 44, lives in the UK.

Like an estimated 30,000 Australians overseas, she wants to get home. But tight caps on quarantine hotels mean only a few hundred a week get that wish.

A quarantine place costs A$3000 (£1,600; $2,200). Flights into Australia can cost many times that amount, and are regularly cancelled.

Anyone whose return is only temporary must get an exemption to leave Australia again.

"My mum in Melbourne has been diagnosed with lung cancer. She is getting palliative care and I need to get back to see her as soon as I can," she says.

"It's been an insane rollercoaster trying to get home. I've just missed out on the September repatriation flights that the Australian government runs with Qantas. I'm on a waiting list for last-minute cancellations.

"I've lived in London since 2006, have built a life here and have a young family. The last time I saw mum was December 2017 when I introduced my first daughter to her. She hasn't met my second child in person but longs to. Heart-breaking is an understatement.

"Even if I make it to Australia, I'll then have to plead for an exemption to be allowed to return to my life and family in the UK. How can I leave my kids here when there's no certainty I can get back to them?

"How can high-profile people enter Australia so easily whilst we sit here grasping at any hope as an Australian citizen?

Bella Hadid shoots down rumours about her not being vaccinated against COVID
Bella Hadid turned to her Instagram to refute claims that she hadn’t gotten the vaccine yet

Fashionista Bella Hadid is hitting back at all trolls who have been speculating that the model is an anti-vaxxer.

Social media users had started speculating that the fashion icon, 24, missed the 2021 Met Gala for similar reasons as rapper Nicki Minaj—who is currently under fire for refusing to get vaccinated and missing the mega fashion event subsequently.

The supermodel turned to her Instagram to refute claims that she hadn’t gotten the vaccine yet by posting a photo of herself getting inoculated.

“For anyone concerned,” wrote the supermodel alongside the photo, adding a heart emoji.

Guests invited to this year's Gala were required to be fully vaccinated and to wear masks at the event at all times.

Minaj had sparked backlash for skipping the event over the vaccine guidelines, claiming nobody should be bullied for choosing to not get the shot.

She also landed in hot waters for spreading misinformation about the COVID-19 vaccines which was shot down by immunologist Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Fauci made an appearance on CNN and explained to host Jake Tapper that the rapper’s claims about the vaccines leading to impotency were false.

“Is there any evidence that the Pfizer, Moderna, or the [Johnson & Johnson] vaccines cause any reproductive issues, in men or women?” asked Tapper to Dr. Fauci.

The 80-year-old responded saying: “The answer to that, Jake, is a resounding no.”

“There’s no evidence that it happens, nor is there any mechanistic reason to imagine that it would happen,” he shared.

The presenter then asked Dr. Fauci about how to curb the spread of misinformation by big stars with colossal platforms.

“It’s very difficult. There is a lot of misinformation, mostly on social media. The only way we know to counter mis- and disinformation is to provide a lot of correct information… These claims may be innocent on her part — I’m not blaming her for anything — but she should be thinking twice about propagating information that really has no basis except a one-off anecdote. That’s not what science is all about,” he said.

Afghanistan: Life under Taliban rule one month on

At Afghanistan's border with Uzbekistan a cargo train rolls over a bridge and into the newly created "Islamic Emirate". The Taliban's white and black flag flutters next to the Uzbek one. Some traders have welcomed the group's return to power. The driver of a truck being loaded with wheat tells me in the past he was regularly forced to pay bribes to corrupt police officials whenever passing their checkpoints. "Now, it's not like that," he says. "I could drive all the way to Kabul and not pay a penny."

It's been exactly one month since the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan. Now cash is in short supply, and the country is facing a mounting economic crisis.

One source in the business community tells us trade levels have dropped significantly, as Afghan importers aren't able to pay for new goods. The Taliban's head of customs at Hairatan port, Maulvi Saeed, tells us the group is cutting duty rates to promote trade, and wants to encourage wealthy traders to return to the country. "It will create jobs for the people, and the businessmen will be rewarded in the afterlife," he says.

Around an hour's drive away is Mazar-i-Sharif, the country's fourth largest city. On the surface life appears to be continuing as normal, though many are suffering financially.

I head to the intricately tiled Blue Mosque, the cultural heart of the city. I was last here in August, shortly before the Taliban takeover. Back then, the grounds were teeming with young men and women posing for selfies.

Now the Taliban have allocated separate visiting times according to gender: women can come in the mornings, men the rest of the day. When we visit, there are plenty of women strolling around, but there seem to be significantly fewer than before. "Things are alright, but maybe people still need more time to get used to the new government," one woman suggests timidly.

I'm meeting Haji Hekmat, an influential local Taliban leader. "You might have brought security," I put to him, "but your critics say you're killing the culture here."

"No," he replies emphatically, "Western influences have been here for the past 20 years… Control of Afghanistan has passed from one foreign hand to another for 40 years, we have lost our own traditions and values. We are bringing our culture back to life."

According to his understanding of Islam, the mixing of men and women is prohibited.

Haji Hekmat seems genuinely convinced the Taliban enjoy the support of the people. Out of his earshot, however, one female visitor whispered to a colleague, "These are not good people."

Whilst the Taliban's interpretation of Islam might clash less with the values of those in more rural, socially conservative villages - in bigger Afghan cities, many remain deeply suspicious of the group. Haji Hekmat puts this down to years of "propaganda" but a history of su***de bombings and targeted assassinations in urban areas is clearly also responsible.

As we leave the Blue Mosque, we spot a large and excited crowd by the main road, and elbow our way to the centre. Four dead bodies with bullet wounds are laid out on display. One has a small handwritten note on top of it describing the men as kidnappers, warning other criminals their punishment will be the same.

Despite the smell of the bodies under the hot sun, the crowd snap photos and try to push past each other for a better look. Violent crime has long been a major problem in Afghanistan's big cities, and even their critics credit the Taliban with improving security. One onlooker tells us, "If they are kidnappers it's a good thing. It will be a lesson for others."

But lots of others in the city don't feel safe. Law student Farzana, tells us, "Every time I step out of my house and I see the Taliban, I shiver with fear."

Private universities like hers are open, but those run by the government remain shut for now. Under the new Taliban rule, male and female students who are studying in the same classroom must be separated by a curtain.

For Farzana, that's not the priority though. She's concerned that the Taliban may not let women work - something the group has denied. For the moment, though, women in Afghanistan are being told to stay at home for their own safety, unless they are teachers or medics.

"Right now I feel hopeless," Farzana says, "but I'm doing my best to stay optimistic for the future."

The last time the Taliban were in power, they introduced far more restrictive measures than they have so far on this occasion, banning women from leaving home without a male companion for example. Much of the fear in Afghan cities today is that similar laws could eventually be introduced again.

Whilst the Taliban are in firm control of the country, they're yet to win the hearts and minds of many residents. Haji Hekmat acknowledges, "Taking over the country militarily was hard, implementing the rule of law and protecting it is even harder.

part 3

Western nations have been wary of China's infrastructure investment on Pacific islands, and have also criticised China's trade sanctions against countries like Australia.

Australia had in the past maintained good relations with China, its biggest trading partner. But the relationship has broken down in recent years amid political tensions.

But there is tension now too with France, after Australia tore up the A$50bn (€31bn; £27bn) deal to build 12 submarines.

"We had established a relationship of trust with Australia, this trust has been betrayed," Mr Le Drian said.

Why nuclear-powered submarines?
These submarines are much faster and harder to detect than conventionally powered fleets. They can stay submerged for months, shoot missiles longer distances and also carry more.

Having them stationed in Australia is critical to US influence in the region, analysts say.

The US is sharing its submarine technology for the first time in 50 years. It had previously only shared technology with the UK.

Australia will become just the seventh nation in the world to operate nuclear-powered submarines, after the US, UK, France, China, India and Russia.

Australia has reaffirmed it has no intention of obtaining nuclear weapons.

Meanwhile New Zealand said it would ban Australia's submarines from its waters, in line with an existing policy on the presence of nuclear-powered submarines.

New Zealand, although a Five Eyes member, has been more cautious in aligning with either the US or China in the Pacific.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said her nation had not been approached to join the pact.

part 2

Speaking to the BBC, UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said China was "embarking on one of the biggest military spends in history".

"It is growing its navy [and] air force at a huge rate. Obviously it is engaged in some disputed areas," he said. "Our partners in those regions want to be able to stand their own ground."

In recent years, Beijing has been accused of raising tensions in disputed territories such as the South China Sea.

ANALYSIS: Why this pact signals a major shift
EXPLAINED: Tensions in the South China Sea
On Thursday, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the pact would "preserve security and stability around the world" and generate "hundreds of high-skilled jobs".

He also said the relationship with France was "rock solid".

The Aukus alliance is probably the most significant security arrangement between the three nations since World War Two, analysts say.

The pact will focus on military capability, separating it from the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance which also includes New Zealand and Canada.

While Australia's submarines is the big-ticket item, Aukus will also involve the sharing of cyber capabilities and other undersea technologies.

"This is an historic opportunity for the three nations, with like-minded allies and partners, to protect shared values and promote security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region," the joint statement read.

"This really shows that all three nations are drawing a line in the sand to start and counter [China's] aggressive moves in the Indo-Pacific," said Guy Boekenstein from the Asia Society Australia.

Part 1

The UK, US and Australia have announced a historic security pact in the Asia-Pacific, in what's seen as an effort to counter China.

It will let Australia build nuclear-powered submarines for the first time, using technology provided by the US.

The Aukus pact, which will also cover AI and other technologies, is one of the countries' biggest defence partnerships in decades, analysts say.

China has condemned the agreement as "extremely irresponsible".

Foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said it "seriously undermines regional peace and stability and intensifies the arms race".

China's embassy in Washington accused the countries of a "Cold War mentality and ideological prejudice".

The pact also created a row with France, which has now lost a deal with Australia to build 12 submarines.

"It's really a stab in the back," France's Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told France Info radio.

The new partnership was announced in a joint virtual press conference between US President Joe Biden, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison on Wednesday.

And while China was not mentioned directly, the three leaders referred repeatedly to regional security concerns which they said had "grown significantly".

Prince Charles' charity chairman steps down amid investigation

Prince Charles seemed to be in trouble as his charity chairman resigned amid funding probes.

The Prince of Wales' charitable foundation is under investigation
after reports that a Russian banker had tried to donate a huge amount to his foundation, according to reports.

The future king's charity foundation is being investigated after scandal. The Chairman of the foundation has also resigned amid ongoing probe which was launched by charity regulator into £100,000 donation.

Douglas Connel quitted following claims of taking a huge donation from a wealthy Russian donor before being rejected by its ethics committee.

The donation to the foundation, which is based in Scotland, was turned down after concerns about its provenance.

The Scottish charity regulator has reportedly launched an investigation after reports that Charles wrote a letter thanking the businessman Dmitry Leus for his offer last year and suggesting they could meet after the Covid crisis.

The Royal Family has apparently plunged into crisis after being hit by two scandals within a week as Queen's son Prince Andrew is also facing a lawsuit over an alleged sexual abuse.

It looks like things are heating up between Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez quite rapidly.

If reports are to be believed, fans might soon be able to hear wedding bells as the power couple has plans to get engaged and tie the knot in the near future.

According to a source, cited by Us Weekly, J.Lo and Affleck, who got engaged previously in September 2003 and broke up soon after in 2004, are looking to pick it up right where they left off.

“They feel so blessed to be living this real-life fairy tale, and will be getting engaged—then married—down the line. Without any shadow of doubt,” said the insider.

“Going red carpet official was a wonderful experience, and they were just so proud to shout their love from the rooftops like they did,” shared the source about their recent red carpet debut at the Venice Film Festival.

“The messages were pouring in from all over Hollywood and beyond, saying how cute they looked, and that meant the world to both Ben and J.Lo,” they said.

WASHINTONG: Top US General Mark Milley held onto his job Wednesday after President Joe Biden rejected pressure to fire him for alleged “secret” phone calls to China amid concerns about then-president Donald Trump’s mental state. “I have great confidence in General Milley,” Biden said.

Republicans demanded Biden dismiss Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, accusing him of undermining civilian control of the military in the calls to his Beijing counterpart last October and January, as Trump refused to accept his election loss.

Milley insisted his calls to Chinese General Li Zuocheng, revealed Tuesday in excerpts from a new book by Washington Post investigative reporters Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, were a normal part of his duties.

“His calls with the Chinese and others in October and January were in keeping with these duties and responsibilities conveying reassurance in order to maintain strategic stability,” Joint Chiefs spokesman Colonel Dave Butler said.

The book, “Peril,” also says that on January 8, two days after Trump supporters ransacked the US Capital building, Milley told his staff that if a “rogue” Trump ordered a nuclear strike, that he would have to confirm it before it was carried out. That, too, was normal procedure, Butler insisted.

Trump had already used the military for his political ends, diverting billions of dollars of Pentagon funding to build an anti-migrant wall on the US Southwest border. But it was too much when, in the summer of 2020 after Black Lives Matter protests spread across the country, Trump wanted Milley to mobilize troops to confront them. According to The Wall Street Journal’s Michael Bender, the two had a shouting match over the issue in the White House Situation Room.

He also reportedly disagreed with Trump’s pressure last year for a rapid withdrawal of all troops from Afghanistan. According to the Woodward-Costa book, just after his election loss Trump had two aides draw up a secret order to have all troops out by January 15. Milley was stunned to find out about the order, discovering that no other senior officials knew about it either. He stormed over to the White House. “What do you mean you have no idea? You’re the national security adviser to the president,” he said to Robert O’Brien, according to the book. “How the hell does this happen?”

O’Brien had the letter cancelled, but it added to suspicions Trump was becoming more erratic and impulsive.According to another book, by Washington Post reporters Carol Leonnig and Philip Rucker, Milley was so worried late last year that Trump intended to hold onto power that he compared the president to Hi**er.

ISLAMABAD: All eyes are on Dushanbe to see who represents Afghanistan at the two-day 20th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Council of Heads of State (SCO-CHS) starting today (16-17 September).

Afghanistan has an observer status and has been striving for full membership. Afghanistan will be on top of agenda of the meeting as Prime Minister Imran Khan, along with a high-level delegation, will fly today for Dushanbe. If there is representation from Afghanistan, it will be Khan’s first high level meeting with an Afghan official after the caretaker government was formed in Kabul.

Several bilateral meetings with other leaders have been confirmed on the sidelines of the meeting. After attending the SCO-CHS, the prime minister will have the bilateral segment of the visit. His talks with Tajik president will cover the entire gamut of bilateral relations, especially enhancing trade, economic and investment ties with a particular focus on regional connectivity. The two countries have earlier expressed strong commitment to enter into a formal strategic partnership.

“Pakistan and Tajikistan enjoy close brotherly relations underpinned by the bonds of common faith, history and culture. The two countries have shared perceptions and a common desire to promote economic development, peace, security and stability in the region “, said the Foreign Office.

“The prime minister has been invited by President Emomali Rahmon and this will be his third visit to Central Asia underlying Pakistan’s enhanced engagement with the region,” said the Foreign Office while announcing the visit.

The prime minister’s visit is part of Pakistan’s deepened engagement with Central Asia through ‘Vision Central Asia’ policy, having revitalised focus in five key areas of political ties, trade and investment, energy and connectivity, security and defence, and people-to-people contacts.

SCO is an 8-member permanent inter-governmental trans-regional Organisation. It was established in Shanghai on 15 June 2001. Pakistan became an SCO Observer in 2005 and a full member in June 2017 during Astana SCO-CHS Summit. Russia, China, India, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic and Tajikistan are other SCO members.

SCO also has 4 Observer states (Iran, Mongolia, Belarus and Afghanistan) and 6 Dialogue Partners (Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cambodia, Nepal, Turkey and Sri Lanka). The premier will also inaugurate the first meeting of Pakistan-Tajikistan Business Forum for which a group of Pakistani businessmen will also visit Dushanbe. The Joint Business Forum will catalyse growing trade and investment relations and promote business to business contacts between the trading communities of both sides. A meeting of Pakistan-Tajikistan Joint Business Council will also be held on the sidelines.
