2024 has been another incredible year for WKUF! Throughout, we’ve remained committed to delivering programming that’s both entertaining and informative. Below is a recap of 2024:
We launched 5 live shows: The student-hosted programs The Gaming Frequency, J’s Jukebox of Discoveries, The B-Sides, and Ginger Gospel and on the community front, March saw the debut of Comedy on Tap with Mark Bonto.
We continue to spotlight music by Michigan artists, old and new, on live shows such as The J.L. Massimino Show, The Outer Ring, Talkin' All That Jazz w/ Will the Thrill, and Gozza Strip Radio. Gozza Strip. Gozza also did his annual “MC Breed Day” in early December. Our automated playlist consistently featured artists from the Great Lake State as well. Many of the Michigan artists WKUF highlights aren’t heard on commercial radio, so we are glad to give them airplay.
I also hosted a 3-hour 60th anniversary tribute to The British Invasion. In addition to several songs by the group who kicked off The British Invasion (The Beatles), the block also included tracks by The Dave Clark Five, Dusty Springfield, Herman’s Hermits, The Animals, Sandie Shaw, The Kinks, and Petula Clark.
We presented one album spotlight: Michael Jackson’s “Off the Wall” (hosted by David Jones). David hosts “Music with St. David” and this was his first time hosting one of our spotlights. I look forward to working with David on more album spotlights in the future.
Also, we did a TV Themes playlist. As a TV fan, putting together this playlist was so much fun. Along with many which are ingrained in our minds, I also dusted off the themes of shows like “Kimba the White Lion”, “Room 222”, “Match Game”, and “The White Shadow”.
We last did a TV themes block in 2019; I doubt it’ll be another 5 years until the next one.
We continued getting informative and insightful feedback on a survey on our automated programming. If you haven’t taken the survey, it’s still available at wkuf.fm. Just select “Automated Survey” from the “Feedback” drop down menu. Any feedback we receive will be taken into consideration when we make decisions about our automated programming.
2024 saw the passing of several famous names from the world of music. On our live and automated shows, we paid tribute to several of them including Mary Weiss (lead singer of The Shangri-La’s), Frankie Beverly, JD Souther, Sergio Mendes, and Quincy Jones.
From all of us at WKUF, thank you for being a part of our journey as we continue to grow and connect with our community! In a world full of endless entertainment options, your continued support means everything to us. Stay tuned to hear what we have in store for you in 2025. Happy New Year!
