QUICK UPDATE: Sorry for not posting over the week. I badly sparained my wrist over the New Year’s break and it greatly limited what I could do. Typing and operating a mouse was nearly impossible and quite painful. On top of that, we have been hit with a deluge of rain and the kid’s schools and my college were all closed yesterday. US drone strike kills an Iranian-led militia leader in Iraq. I don't know about you, but that headline makes my spidey-senses start to tingle. With everything going on in Gaza (which I'm trying my best to stay out of on this platform), I was waiting to see who would take advantage of what, and when. With Thursday's drone strike, the US may be trying to "clean up" as much as they can while the world is otherwise occupied. Picking a fight with Russian-backed Iran and pi***ng off Iraq seems like a bad idea... but what do I know! I've only lived through two Iraq and two Afghanistan wars. The thought of drone strikes in general is unsettling, and this only throws another log on top of the inferno that is the North African/Middle East political and religious climate. Let's hope for peace!✌️

They keep coming. As I powered up my devices and started to sift through the headlines of the day, I was really really really hoping that there wouldn't be another earthquake... well... there was another earthquake. This time a 2.0 magnitude quake centered in New Hampshire. This is a relatively minor quake and as such has not been giving too much media attention. Yes, this was a minor quake, but yet another following the New Year's spate of them. With a winter storm set to hit my area over the next few days (we're on a winter storm watch), and these quakes accumulating at an alarming pace, I can't help but feel like the sky is falling. My thoughts are with those in Japan that lost their lives, are still missing, and have lost friends and family in the recent quake. I hope that we, as in the royal we, are taking these quakes seriously and not digging our heads further into the sand. It is easy to ignore the growing situation when the quakes cause damage in Japan, or Chile, or India... NIMBY. But, these are hitting home, and I'm truly worried for my friends and family in California. To my mountain folk, get ready for the storm. Everyone else... keep up those swimming lessons!

...and I repeat, the Big One? With yesterday's 1.7 magnitude earthquake in New York, my fears of an imminent massive seismic event have grown exponentially. Earthquakes do come in clusters, this isn't rare, but the amount of these recent ones and the variety of locations is more than worrisome. Is this our doing, with fracking and such? Is this just the Earth waking up and letting everyone know who's boss? I have no idea. I just know that this feels ominous, as in "I'm really glad that I live on top of a mountain" ominous. Maybe it will be nothing, just a spate of small quakes... but again, this feels different. Here's to hoping I'm dead wrong!

Is the Big One coming? With the rash of earthquakes along the "Ring of Fire" (no Taco Bell jokes please), is a massive earthquake in our near future? On New Year's Day, there were five earthquakes along the California coastline and a dozen or so more in Japan. The biggest of the bunch didn't break 5.0 on the scale, but these could be the precursor to a much much bigger seismic event. Spates of smaller earthquakes typically come before a much bigger one. Not the ideal way to start 2024, but what can you do. If you live anywhere near the coastline or the Ring of Fire, I'd take the advice so eloquently given by TOOL and... learn to swim.
