Cameron uranium protest
Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren led dozens of people in a protest march Friday on Highway 89 in Cameron against the transport of uranium ore through the reservation. The road is part of the haul route taken by trucks from the Pinyon Plain Mine that drove through the reservation to a mill in southern Utah Tuesday.
3Echo smoke balloon
Sometimes you just have to go old school. Fire managers on the U.S. Forest Service - Coconino National Forest release a balloon prior to ignitions on the 3Echo prescribed burn Friday to determine the likely path of the smoke.
3Echo Prescribed Burn
On Friday, firefighters set 600 acres ablaze to reduce dry fuels and the risk of catastrophic wildfire in an area five miles south of Flagstaff. It was the last day of the 3Echo prescribed burn project.
Flagstaff abortion protest 4/12/24
Hundreds of protestors took to the lawn outside of Flagstaff City Hall on Friday in response to a recent ruling by the Arizona Supreme Court that an 1864 near-total abortion ban can go into effect in the state. The decision has sparked a nationwide reaction in defense of reproductive rights.
EASTER STORM
Very windy again Saturday ahead of a Pacific storm due Easter. The system moves inland Saturday evening with rain and snow developing across AZ into Easter Sunday. The period of heaviest snowfall for the Flagstaff region, I17&40 corridors looks to be midnight Sunday into midday, shifting into eastern AZ through the afternoon and evening (total snow forecasts range from 4-8” Flagstaff region, 6-10” eastern Rim and Whites, light amounts below 6000'). Sunday travel will be hazardous across the high country with snow down to 4500’ at times. Lighter, yet significant snow and rain continue into Monday.
WINTER RETURNS
Tomorrow February 1 a Pacific storm approaches the region with rain entering western AZ during the morning spreading from west to east through the day, becoming widespread rain and snow Thursday night into Friday, quickly winding down Saturday. General snowfall accumulations range from 4-8” above 6000’, 1-2” to 5500’, rainfall amounts for lower elevation range from half to one inch south of the Mogollon Rim and up to a quarter inch north.
The most hazardous period of travel will be Friday morning.

Saturday the first of two Pacific storms slowly enters Arizona with light rain and mountain snow showers developing through the late afternoon and overnight. Sunday turns colder through a wet and snowy day, snow will fall to 6500’ in elevation, generally 1-3”, 0.25-0.50" of healthy rain at lower elevations. Light showers continue into Monday then the second, similar system arrives with more rain and snow Tuesday, stay tuned.
Friday the much-discussed Pacific storm is set to deliver healthy rain region wide, snow levels remain above 8000’ through the day. Friday night into Saturday snow levels fall to near 6000’ as showers continue across the region, expect periods of difficult travel across the high country. The storm clears Saturday night with clear conditions returning into the Christmas holiday.
Snow forecast amounts look to be generally 1-4” with up to a foot for the high mountains.
Rainfall forecast for lower elevations will be near an inch south of the Mogollon Rim, near ½” north of Rim.
A bit of snow and colder temperatures will make for a more wintry, festive holiday!

An area of cutoff low pressure has been wobbling off the CA coast the past several days. Seen on satellite this Wednesday afternoon 11/15, it has tapped into a fetch of low level subtropical moisture headed into SoCal. Rain showers enter western AZ around midnight Thursday spreading across the region through the pre-dawn hours, quickly winding down Thursday morning, west-central AZ will make out best, near a quarter inch of rain is expected, lesser amounts across northern and eastern regions. A second round of rain showers is expected on Saturday. Snow levels will remain above 8500'.
On Friday, KNAU caught a ride with Coconino National Forest firefighters who are setting back-burns as part of their management of the lightning-caused Volunteer Fire west of Flagstaff. They’re using it to improve forest health in an area that hasn’t burned in nearly a hundred years.
Here was the scene in Wupatki Trails Thursday as crews dug two huge canals to channel floodwaters. The neighborhood was one of the most heavily impacted from post-fire flooding flooding last summer’s Pipeline Fire.
Elden runoff
The detention basins on Elden Lookout Road in Flagstaff were still near capacity Thursday afternoon as runoff from snowmelt covered the roadway and flowed downstream in Schultz Creek.
