Mayor Stehr asks Town Council to delay vote on the South Village PUD

Zionsville Mayor John Stehr has withdrawn the South Village Planned Unit Development (PUD) from Town Council consideration. The PUD passed the Plan Commission on July 15th, and was set to be on the Town Council agenda for its August 5th meeting.

“It has become clear to me that we do not have appropriate consensus to move forward at this time,” Stehr said, “the South Village area is key to preserving the culture and aesthetic of our iconic brick street. We must get it right.”

Redeveloping the South Village was a major campaign issue for the Stehr, and he first announced his PUD proposal in March. Since then, he has held 35 “South Village Chats” to discuss the plan with the public, stakeholders, and town staff. Input from other elected and appointed leaders was also incorporated into the plan as it evolved.

In a letter to the Town Council, the Mayor wrote: “Like it or not, development is at our doorstep, and nearly 70% of the South Village district property is privately-owned. We have urged these landowners to hold off on their projects until we could deliver a set of parameters in the form of a PUD document that represents a consensus around a vision for development in the area. Despite everyone’s best efforts, we have not been able to get there. I was hoping to achieve common ground upon which we could all stand, but it has become clear to me that a close vote (either way) is not a win for Zionsville.”

Moving forward, the Mayor says positive change is possible in the South Village and that it can benefit everyone in Zionsville. He is urging stakeholders to not delay action that will support economic development in our community.

“I hope we can use the PUD document that we have all worked on so hard to create as the backbone to shape the aesthetic vision for this vitally important area of our town.”

*BREAKING*
ZIONSVILLE DEPUTY MAYOR KATE SWANSON RESIGNS ZIONSVILLE, INDIANA
Zionsville Mayor John Stehr has announced a change at the top of his administration.
"I have accepted with regret the resignation of Deputy Mayor Kate Swanson," Stehr said. "Kate's energy, intellect, and passion for Zionsville have made her a tremendous partner in the first five months of my administration. She has been instrumental in launching key initiatives like my Zionsville 2040 Vision, the South Village project, and the Mayor's Youth Advisory Council."
Stehr announced Swanson as his pick for Deputy Mayor in March of 2023 while campaigning for the Republican nomination for Mayor.
Swanson Chaired the Mayor's Transition Committee and took office as Deputy Mayor in January of this year. Prior to her service in Mayor Stehr's administration, Swanson was the first Executive Director of ZWORKS, Zionsville's coworking and entrepreneurial center. She was also the first Executive Director of the Mitch Daniels Leadership Foundation (MDLF), a non-profit focused on lifting the arc of progress in Indiana. Swanson served as a director of the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce from 2018 to 2023 and served as Chamber President in 2020. In 2021, she helped launch the Chamber's Advocacy Committee, which supports Zionsville businesses in front of policymakers.
"Kate has left a meaningful impact on our community," Stehr said. "As she steps away to focus her attention on personal matters, I am grateful for her service and her friendship. I wish her and her family nothing but the absolute best.*
Kate Swanson's resignation as Deputy Mayor will be effective June 20, 2024.

The Town of Zionsville has partnered with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a fun way to celebrate the month of May🏁🏎️

We have signed on to participate in “Porch Parties” What is a Porch Party you ask? In essence, it’s what “This is May” is all about! In 2014, the Harrison Center began encouraging people to gather on their porches with friends and neighbors, to share food and drink, and to help cultivate a sense of community in our neighborhoods. Since that time, the popularity of "porching" has soared. In 2016, through a partnership with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Porch Party movement grew to include the entire state of Indiana, and hundreds have joined in the fun.
