Let’s talk boundaries.
As SMMs, we are constantly juggling a million things at the same time. It is so easy to get caught up in the grind that you find yourself in a vicious “yes-cycle.”
If you don’t already, lean on your contract to define what is, or is not, within your scope of work! A few examples of simple, basic boundaries you can establish with a client:
- Saying ’No’ to any work outside of your scope of work without compensation
- Setting office hours (or communicate to your client when you’re available)
- Let them know when you’ll be OOO (and actually take some time off!)
You can also establish a boundary by deciding not to work with someone. Say you take your discovery call/meeting, and you just really didn’t feel that you’d mesh with this person/business. Maybe you’ll have a difficult time communicating with them or managing expectations. In the long run, you are better off not taking on this account. Instead, pour your energy into your existing accounts and trust that your dream client is on their way.
For me, transparency and honesty is the most natural approach. Even when I was starting out and began juggling multiple accounts, I was always transparent and realistic with the workload that I could commit to. I never want to over promise and under deliver.
Even on a personal level, the people I respect the most are the ones that can be honest and transparent with me. I operate well within those circumstances.
That being said, I know it can be difficult for some people to set boundaries and be honest (believe me, it’s something I’ve been working on for years). For starters, just try to steer clear from people-pleasing!
All I know from my experience, is establishing trust, honesty and transparency with my clients has given us a strong foundation to build from.
Trust yourself and know your value- you’ve got this! 🫶🏼
