I used to [GASP] really struggle with perfectionism. 💯⁣

Not just in my writing life, but at school, at work, at home ... basically everywhere.⁣

If I didn't do things perfectly, I would disappoint myself. Often, if I feared I couldn't do something "correctly," I refused to even try. 🙅‍♀️⁣

But now I've learned that doing things imperfectly is way more fun! 🔥 Taking action every day toward my goals is so much more rewarding than taking weeks to move one tiny step forward.⁣

If you're a writer struggling to move past worldbuilding and plotting to actually WRITE, you're not alone! But you also don't need to stay stuck.⁣

I just published a new blog post for September: "Move Past Perfectionism and Finish Your Book!" 💪 In the post, I walk you through 3 simple strategies to finish the first draft of your novel ... without succumbing to perfectionism along the way.⁣

I've linked my post in the comments.⁣

Enjoy!⁣

✍️ Writing Tip Tuesday - THAT DARN VILLAIN ✍️⁣

Hey writers! You (and your readers) probably relate more to the protagonist in your story than the antagonist. This is healthy and normal!⁣

I mean, people might question you if you secretly dream of destroying the world.⁣

Or if you enjoy stalking people.⁣

Or if tripping people down the stairs makes you giggle. 😈⁣

You get the point.⁣

Just be careful you don’t accidentally create a villain who, in the words of author and Hugo award winner J. Michael Straczynski, is “designed to be defeated.”⁣

Someone who doesn’t possess nearly the same level of wits and skill as your hero.⁣

A smart, capable protagonist deserves a smart, capable antagonist—someone who doesn’t match their level trait for trait, but is so far BEYOND it that readers can’t help but AGONIZE over how the heck your protagonist will overcome the evil.⁣

Yeah, yeah, we all know the good guy will likely win in the end. 🏆⁣

But the tougher the victory, the sweeter the ride.⁣

No one likes watching basketball when the score is 50-0.⁣

There’s no competition. It’s in the bag. It’s even painful to witness. 😬⁣

Give your protagonist a more-than-worthy opponent. You don’t even have to figure out HOW the good guy wins before you start writing.⁣

Truth.⁣

Instead, let that smartypants protagonist of yours do all the work. 🤓⁣

EVOLUTION OF A COACH⁣

💫 Hey writers, I’m super excited for this!!⁣

Maybe you didn’t know, but I wrote a fantasy trilogy back in the day (from age 14 into my mid-twenties). 📚⁣

At age 19, with my fingers crossed and my head held high, I submitted my SUPER AWESOME first novel to literary agents.⁣

Like a LOT of literary agents.⁣

And I heard . . . crickets. 🦗 A smidgen of itty bitty interest here and there, but mostly crickets. Definitely no takers when it came to publication.⁣

Huh . . . guess my SUPER AWESOME novel wasn’t as SUPER AWESOME as I thought.⁣

I could have given up.⁣

Told myself I sucked.⁣

Squashed that calling deep within me. The one that insisted I was always meant to write. ✍️⁣

But I was born without that gene—the one that urges you to JUST COOL IT ALREADY and accept reasonable defeat.⁣

So instead of giving up, I buckled down.⁣

Took writing classes all through college. Worked at a writing center. Found a writing mentor with a Ph.D.⁣

Joined a critique group. Read TONS of books on writing. Taught creative writing for 6 years. ⁣

📝 Wrote more books. Tutored for 4 more years. Worked my way up to become co-leader of my writing critique group.⁣

Learned the power of the right mindset. Became an editor. Became a book coach.⁣

Now I work with fiction writers all day. I help them craft their stories in a way that resonates with readers on an emotional level—and stays true to their original vision.⁣

Writers who, like me, aren’t willing to suppress their calling. Writers who know that spilling pieces of their inner selves onto the page, then revising and revising and revising until their work reflects the vision they intended is SO HARD and SO WORTH IT.⁣

I gotta say, it’s a pretty awesome and fulfilling life. 😆⁣

So why am I posting?⁣

First, to share a piece of my life with you. And second, to announce I’m launching my new book coaching program specifically designed for fantasy writers! 🧝‍♂️ 🐉 ⚔️⁣

Bring it on, nerds! I’ve got your back. Always.⁣

Stay tuned for future updates!!

Now go hunker down with a good book! 😁⁣

✍️ Writing Tip Tuesday: KEEP THAT MOMENTUM ✍️

Hey writers! Want a quick way to maintain your momentum between writing sessions?

Try this:

❇️ Stop in the middle of a sentence before you close your laptop for the day.

Your brain won’t like it at first—it may urge you to finish the thought you started. But after that initial resistance, your brain will suck it up and keep working in the background overnight, providing you with a clearer roadmap when you come back to your computer the next day.

Skeptical? Don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it!
