ALBUQUERQUE – It is a ritual that takes place every winter – federal and state wildlife managers use remote cameras, s**t collection, radio telemetry devices and helicopters to count Mexican gray wolves that are roaming mountain ranges in parts of New Mexico and Arizona.

The predators that are captured during the annual survey are weighed and vaccinated, their blood is drawn and their radio collars are checked. It is all part of a decades-long effort to gauge the success of the work being done to return the endangered species to its historic range in the southwestern U.S. and in Mexico.

The leader of the Cibola National Forest told Forest Service employees at a staff meeting Wednesday that the agency would be refocusing on “mission critical” areas like uranium mining, according to a recording of the meeting Source New Mexico obtained. Officials also told staff that 15 employees had been fired.

The virtual all-hands meeting with more than 100 employees laid bare the confusion and concerns among rank-and-file members amid a flurry of presidential executive orders; mass firings of probationary employees; and mixed signals from President Donald Trump and his newly confirmed United States Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins.

Vanessa Herrera saw the first sign of a problem with her son Alex when he was one years old. She was changing him and noticed a large bump and bruise on his chest.

Alex’s grandmother had been watching him and, when Herrera asked what had happened, she said he hadn’t fallen or gotten hurt. They took Alex to the hospital near their home in Arroyo Seco, a small town in Taos County in Northern New Mexico.

When medical workers tried to draw blood from his arm, it swelled. The next day, they went to the Taos Clinic For Children & Youth, where the doctor, who has hemophilia herself, recognized Alex’s condition.

She sent them to the University of New Mexico Hospital two-and-a-half hours south in Albuquerque, where they were able to test Alex’s blood and confirm the rare bleeding disorder that prevents the blood from clotting and can be life-threatening.

Herrera, a single working mother of three, shared how Medicaid cuts would affect her son and other families at a Friday news conference hosted at another clinic in Northern New Mexico and organized by U.S. Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández, a Democrat for the largely Northern New Mexico 3rd Congressional District where Herrera resides.

SANTA FE – The piñon- and juniper-scented Rocky Mountain foothills overlooking Santa Fe have helped the city earn a reputation as a refuge for famous actors and authors seeking to escape the spotlight.

Sometimes the world's attention is unavoidable, as it was this week when Oscar-winner Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead inside their home in those very foothills.

Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 65, eschewed fame and made Santa Fe their home decades ago, like many other acclaimed artists, including the actors Shirley MacLaine and Ali MacGraw and “Game of Thrones” author George R.R. Martin.

BLOOMFIELD – Tucked away from the boisterous crowds which gather for sporting events around San Juan County, there is a healthy amount of competition taking place on the first Thursday of each month at the Bloomfield Public Library where locals take part in a meeting of mahjong players.

For the past several months, a group of retirees enjoy the company of each other and participate in several games of one of the most cherished forms of competition around the world. One of the organizers of the monthly meeting Vicki Whitaker, calls the gathering “a meeting of people who either know nothing of the game and some of us who have played it for a long time.”
