This one got a little tense at times, I will admit. You’ll have to let me know how I did with those bumpy moments. 😅

In my faith tradition, we excise the word “Alleluia” from our vocabulary during Lent. Why? Because it’s important to save the celebratory exclamations for the appropriate time so that we might more deeply enter those 40 days in the desert with Jesus, to face our human weakness and propensity to sin. Only when we acknowledge our failings and seek repentance can we start anew and accept the reality of the Resurrection and the freedom that God wants for us all....

Whenever the topic of abortion comes up in “Living Faith,” strong emotions in every direction follow. Most recently, the subject emerged from this letter to the editor and my response . The morning my column ran, I received an email from an individual who expounded on my having revealed that a woman who had recently scheduled an appointment for an abortion later emerged from the local abortion facility, sharing that she had decided to keep her child....

Writing publicly on controversial topics can evoke disagreement, so I was prepared to let the Feb. 26 letter to the editor by Hilary Ray dangle. But I’m concerned about the public being misled. It seems important to note that Ray and I spend time in a similar space, sometimes just feet from each other, on a regular basis; she, as an es**rt who brings women seeking abortion into our local abortion facility, and I, as a sidewalk advocate attempting to offer life-giving help to the clients....

For years, I’ve been watching women walking into and out of the abortion facility here in the Red River Valley. But despite this scene playing out hundreds of times in my experience, I’ve only recently pondered the sheer aloneness of it all and how that very thing fuels so much of this sad industry. For they not only walk in and out, but they do so alone....

Jim Jawaski shows off his recovering legs from his hospital bed at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo in the fall of 2023. BRECKENRIDGE, Minn. – One uneven turn and a life can change forever. James “Jim” Jawaski, 59, knew this, but on Sept. 27, 2023, he met that reality in a near-fatal way. It was a celebratory week. Just four days earlier, the Jawaski family had gathered for the wedding of his foster son, Darian Clark, and his bride, Samantha, at Crooked Lane Farm in Colfax, North Dakota....

A guitarist opens for Canadian psychologist and author Dr. Jordan Peterson before his speech at Scheels Arena in Fargo Feb. 21. FARGO – An unknowing passerby to the Scheel’s Arena on Feb. 21 might have assumed the sprawling line of people outside indicated a high-interest athletic event was about to begin. Few likely would have guessed that, instead, a Harvard-schooled Canadian psychologist wearing a two-tone suit—blue on one side, orange on the other—was about to take the stage....

The Saturday before Valentine’s Day, our parish hosted its annual Couples Night Out to celebrate marriage. One couple had been married a year ago, while another celebrated 59 years. Being among them, and about halfway between, I felt as if the world’s best kept secret was holed up in that room. So many, it seems, have given up on the hope of true, enduring love being possible....

Grateful for my lovely chat with Nancy Gourde about the impact of good stories on our lives, with a little dip into the controversial topic of book bans. With decades of teaching English behind her, Mrs. Gourde shares from the heart of experience and a love for humanity.

Can we find God, and learn more about the divine, through reading a good story?
