Construction on the Great Pond Phase 1 sewer expansion project is set to break ground in 2026 and will cost less than originally anticipated. 💰

Wastewater Superintendent Amy A. Lowell said estimated costs have fallen a little more than $7 million from the original $60 million total price tag that Town Meeting voters approved in April.

The area to be sewered includes the northeastern corner of the Maravista peninsula and the Teaticket peninsula. The project will also include a lift station on the parcel on Brick Kiln Road, where the future police station is to be located and force mains from the sewer service area, which will propel effluent from collection systems to the wastewater treatment facility on Blacksmith Shop Road.

The latest Hospital Safety Grades from a national watchdog group show a contrast in patient safety performance between Falmouth Hospital and Cape Cod Hospital, despite both hospitals being operated and managed by the same parent organization, Cape Cod Healthcare.

Overall, Cape Cod Hospital received an “A” grade. Falmouth Hospital, on the other hand, received a “C.”

The grades were issued by the Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization that releases hospital safety grades twice a year to help patients compare hospitals using standardized safety data. For more than 20 years, the group has evaluated hospitals across the country on 32 measures of patient safety.

Approximately 150 people began their new year plunging into 32°F water at Monument Beach on Thursday, January 1, for the 29th Annual Monument Beach Polar Plunge. ☃️🌊

Hosted by the Monument Beach Polar Club (MBPC), the proceeds will be donated to the Bourne Food Pantry, which assists more than 400 families year-round.

Despite the weather conditions—snow, gusty winds and temperatures around 24°F, with a feels-like temperature of 12°F—a large crowd of people began to congregate as the snow began to lighten, with some wearing festive costumes.

Cape Cod Community College Board of Trustees voted on October 23 to place President John L. Cox on paid administrative leave and appoint Vice President of Finance and Operations Chris Clark as the temporary replacement. Just about a month later, a new administrator was named.

The board met on November 19 and voted, in executive session, to name Carlnita P. Greene, vice president of academic affairs, as administrator in charge.

It has been more than two months since Cox was placed on paid administrative leave and the reasoning behind the decision remains unclear.

The Town of Bourne has been awarded Seasonal Community designation by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities (EOHLC), if the town wants it. The designation by the state agency is not final until residents vote approval at Town Meeting.

EOHLC Secretary Edward M. Augustus Jr., announced the award in a letter to Bourne Town Administrator Marlene V. McCollem dated December 10. In his letter, Augustus said that Bourne had received the Seasonal Community designation for two reasons.

First, the town’s rate of short-term rentals in relation to its overall housing inventory was more than 3.25%. Second, housing stock in Bourne that is used for season, occasional or recreational use, and not as a primary residence, is more than 12.5% of the overall housing inventory.

The completion of a food systems assessment was a first step in what will be a years-long endeavor to preserve farmable land for local nonprofit Farming Falmouth. Community engagement via four upcoming community conversations will propel the next steps in improving the system. 🌱

The conversations, which will function as workshops, are planned from January through April. A food summit is also anticipated in May, but a date and location have not been decided yet. Each workshop will focus on one of the actionable recommendations identified in the food assessment as ways to support the food system.
