The Falmouth High School boys’ basketball team felt like it had something to prove on Tuesday night, January 6, after a disappointing showing in their previous outing, and they took their frustrations out on league rivals Sandwich. With senior KJ Keuchkarian playing his best game at the varsity level to lead the way, the Clippers dominated from the outset and blew out the Blue Knights by a 71-36 score.

Sandwich opened the game with the first bucket of the night, a hoop from their leading scorer Jaydan Diaz. After that, it was all Clippers the rest of the way.

The Sandwich Commission on Disability unanimously accepted a draft campaign that highlights education, safety and public-facing communication related to accessible parking at its regular meeting on January 7.

Commissioner Julia Wright said the campaign will adopt numerous policies regarding accessible parking, including ideas of access versus convenience and temporary disability eligibility.

A central feature of the accessible parking campaign will be a strong social media effort to “get the word out” about who is eligible for accessible parking and the rationale for not taking accessible parking spots if not eligible. Wright said citizens will be involved in identifying parking violations and restructuring conversations to be less confrontational and more educational.

Massachusetts Maritime Academy cadets have been prepping for the upcoming Sea Term departure of the Patriot State—a tradition known as Alongside Week. The ship will depart from Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Saturday, January 10. ⚓️

This is the second Sea Term for the vessel, which will be the first of its kind to travel through the Panama Canal, Massachusetts Maritime Academy Vice President of External Affairs Elizabeth Simmons said. Cadets travel through the Panama Canal once every four years, she said.

Simmons said that the Patriot State is a national security multi-mission vessel, meaning that “in times of need, she can be called up to serve her country” in addition to serving as a training vessel for the next generation.

Falmouth Fire Rescue Department Chief Timothy R. Smith sat in his office on Tuesday morning, January 6, among small but growing piles of paperwork, office knick-knacks, photographs and other evidence of a nearly 40-year career with the department, waiting to be sorted and packed up.

Smith is set to retire on January 23. He sat down with the Enterprise to review his tenure as well as his hopes for the next occupant of his position.

After 39 years, Smith said, he is ready to enjoy those special Falmouth moments like the Fourth of July fireworks and the Falmouth Road Race for the first time as a regular resident, rather than a first responder.

“The job is 24/7/365,” Smith said. But, he added, the department of dedicated professionals and the respectful and supportive Falmouth community have made his job “the best job in the world.”

Song will take over as administrator for the company in late March when she succeeds Margaret Downey, who has served as the organization’s administrator since August 2014. Eight Cousins Books will be moving out of one of its two Main Street locations by the end of May.

“Starting in the next few weeks, we will be moving our children's books, toys and games out of Eight Cousins Kids (189 Main Street) and into our Eight Cousins location at 199 Main Street,” the owners stated in a newsletter issued Wednesday.

In a phone call with the Enterprise, co-owner Eileen C. Miskell shared that the bookstore’s lease of the brick building at 189 Main Street is set to expire at the end of May. The well-known brick building at 189 Main Street has been used as a children-centered space since the store expanded to a second location on Main Street in July 2024.

⚠️ Based on feedback and concerns with the proposal, Mashpee Town Manager Rodney C. Collins told the Select Board on Monday that the town will not be moving forward with constructing a roundabout at the intersection of Route 130 and Great Neck Road North. The decision puts the brakes on a plan initially raised in December 2021, seeking to replace the existing traffic signal with a roundabout.

The town also hit pause on plans to take both Godfrey Road and Barbary Circle and make them public roads due to incompatibilities between the stormwater system requirements and the existing infrastructure. The road taking was approved at Town Meeting in October.

📝 From the Enterprise's Sandwich High School intern Paige Morrison's column, "Saying Goodbye To The Sandwich Enterprise":

"Throughout the semester of my internship, I wrote four articles that were published on the front page. I came out of the internship with more personal growth as both a writer and an individual than I have experienced before. I am eternally grateful for the opportunity that everyone at the Enterprise and my school was willing to give me, as it has left a lasting impact on both my education and my future.

To students and parents of children who attend Sandwich High School, who I hope may be reading this, I strongly encourage you to consider the Senior Project course. It provides students with opportunities that extend beyond the classroom, allowing them to explore real-world careers before taking their next step forward."
