I truly believe everything is better if you can make it, or fix it yourself. You don't need a lot of tools or a giant shop to make awesome things. I cover topics like Woodworking, Leathercraft, Metalworking, Auto Repair, Guitar Building, and even some around the house projects. I feel that things like this are very important for us as well as our children to learn. With the declining shop classes

in schools now I try to teach these skills to my Daughter whenever possible. I make these projects into videos and share them with you on my YouTube Channel as well as here on Facebook. You can find all my links below. Thanks for subscribing to my channel, and once again, Welcome.

I got the brackets made that will hold this giant sander on its edge. Now it needs to get mounted to a table so I can figure out how to mount the motor. It's coming along and will be cool when it's done.

Just a reminder. We're getting quite a lot of snow in Colorado right now. Don't forget to bring your glue inside if it's in an unheated shop. There's nothing worse than discovering your brand new bottle of glue froze solid overnight.

I picked up this cool creation on Marketplace. It's homemade and pretty well done. My plan is to convert it into something that resembles an edge sander. This will be fun. The first video is underway.

I learn the most by experimenting with different techniques, and different ways of doing things. I decided to try a few different methods to apply some finish, while giving this shoe rack I made almost 10 years ago, a little makeover. It turns out that the method not mentioned by the manufacturer was the best way to apply it. Check it out in the link below.

Well, this isn't exactly what I needed to be working on today. Something shorted out in the alternator and I thought the car was going to catch on fire. All the smoke came out of it. Thankfully I got the battery disconnected and all is well. Now to put the new one back on. It's not fun but also not terribly hard.

I hope your day is going great. Don't let the smoke out.

Sometimes a large project requires an equipment upgrade.

I'm currently working on a project that requires 100's of hours of 3d printing. My little Ender 3 just can't keep up. It's been a great printer but it doesn't have the capacity to complete the project in time. I'm excited to try out this one from . This is the X1 Carbon. The increased speed should get this project done, plus there's a bunch of other cool features I'm looking forward to trying out.

I working on a project right now that is using a lot of walnut. Out of the 20 plus boards I had to buy, this one in particular got set aside. Can you tell why? Now I have to buy an extra board but that's ok in order to keep this nice figured one for myself. This need to be used for a guitar I think.

Today I'm literally a shade tree mechanic. It's time for spark plugs on this vehicle. I still can't wrap my head around the fact that they only get replaced every 100K miles. I decided to make a video of this process this time around.

Since today is National Left Handers Day, I thought I'd show you my latest left handed creation. This is the Hayley Guitars SubTonic Bass I just completed. I make the first model a lefty so I can try it out myself. So far I'm really liking this bass. It's made from some siberian Elm and in this picture, it's leaning against a Siberian Elm. Happy Left Handers day.

I just released the final episode of this build on my YouTube Channel if you want to check it out.

Today I'm cutting out a bunch of spalted maple fretboard markers for some guitars. I'm using the xtool laser instead of a plug cutter. It works great. I do a lot of passes to avoid burning. Stay tuned to see the guitars these will be going on.

What are you working on today?

I recently got to meet up with Eric Schaefer of Eric Schaefer Guitars. Eric gave us a tour of his guitar workshop. It was awesome to hang out with him and see his shop. Here is a little shop tour video. There are lots of great pieces of information throughout this video so be sure to watch all of it. Thank you Eric for taking the time to allow us into your shop.

I finished the cuts on the first SubTonic bass guitar. This one is a lefty so I can play it and is made from Elm that I milled up myself with a chainsaw mill. The neck is hard maple. Everything fits great so far. I'm working on the video now. This is super cool and exciting to see a new instrument come to life.

I'm working on roasting some necks. Actually, it was marshmallows. After prototyping many necks, I decided the best use would be fuel for smores. I'm cleaning up the shop and getting ready to hopefully start making the real Subtonic Bass.

His is completely unrelated to any project, but here's a little something we got to see during recent travels. It was quite surreal to visit this spot. The large boulder is in the spot where the plane came to rest. It was an honor to read all the names of the passengers on the memorial.

Our Story

Welcome to Home Built Workshop. Everything is better if you can make it, or fix it yourself. You don't need a lot of tools, or a huge shop to make awesome things. I cover topics like Woodworking, Metalworking, Auto Repair, and even some around the house projects. I’m a musician as well, and love building and playing guitars. I started my own line of handmade electric guitars called Hayley Guitars. I bet you can’t guess why I chose that name.
