During a presentation at the museum yesterday, Police Lt. Shane Nolte talked about interesting experiences in his 25-year career with FPD; even said there once was an Otis-like character (Mayberry, Andy Griffith TV show) who actually lived at the old jail for a time back in the day -- and had his cell's key! He eventually got dried-out and found his own place, Nolte added.

Nolte said he grew up on the family farm south of town but when he turned 17 his daddy told him he needed to "make more money" ... so he studied computer programming for a while, but that did not work out so he applied to be a police/fire dispatcher in 1995 -- and worked his way up ever since then.

Nolte said when his great uncle Henry Nolte, city's police chief from 1985-89, found out he had joined the force too, his only comment was "boy, have you lost your mind!"

He said he would be eligible for retirement soon but did not know anything but police work; was still undecided about that. (Edited)

After being closed by the contractor yesterday, the pier oval reopened to traffic this morning until after Labor Day. Construction equipment being staged too. Beer delivered to Blind Tiger restaurant as well! "Soft opening" (invited guests only) tonight and tomorrow according to beer delivery guy!

New plan is to close to thru traffic again Tuesday, contractor says.

Update: The contractor subsequently decided to reopen to traffic until after Labor Day

BREAKING NEWS: Traffic around the fountain oval has now been blocked off for construction, as expected. Be prepared to make a U-turn there. No large trucks/trailers allowed. No word yet when the "old" fountain will be shut off ... for the last time. ADDITIONAL PARKING WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE DURING CONSTRUCTION IN THE BEACH PARK ... TO THE NORTH. .

Quail Creek Power Failure Being Fixed. City electric department crews are busy today repairing underground cables that failed early Monday morning on Quail Creek Drive, causing power outages in that neighborhood. The city council approved emergency funding for the parts needed during last Monday's meeting.

FAIRHOPE STARBUCKS STORE 78780 PROGRESS REPORT: Fences are down and interior construction in final stages. Advertising now for baristas/supervisors too. Grand opening should be by the end of the year (53 S. Greeno Road).
