It's commmmming! Whether you're ready to break out the mistletoe on November 1st or don't celebrate at all, read up on some fun facts about a holiday that has roots in the Roman empire.

The festival of Saturnalia, celebrated by the Romans, was in late December, included feasts, gift-giving, and even role reversals between masters and slaves. If Christmas ever feels chaotic, just remember that at least no one's swapping social status for the day… though perhaps this was the influence for the Christmas film “Trading Places”.

Fun Fact: The human body naturally produces small amounts of ethanol through digestion.

Turns out, we're all walking distilleries. Our gut bacteria are constantly fermenting away, creating tiny amounts of ethanol as a byproduct. So, the next time someone accuses you of having one too many, you can truthfully say, "It's not me, it's my microbiome!" Just don't expect that excuse to hold up in court.

Some people have a condition called Auto-brewery syndrome (ABS), also known as gut fermentation syndrome. It's a rare condition where the body produces A LOT of alcohol from carbohydrates consumed through food.

Phi, the Golden Ratio, divine proportions... an endless number with many names. The Golden Ratio is an irrational number, meaning it continues into infinity (like pi - 3.14...) and it hides in so many things in nature.

The spiral in a nautilus's shell, ferns, even your hand - rather your whole body contains phi. For example, if you measure the length of your middle finger and multiply that number by phi, it will equal the length of your hand. The length of your hand multiplied by phi, well that would equal the length of your forearm. (More or less)

Now, if you tried it and came up short (ba dum cha!) don't worry, it's not the math, it's just because you're probably not perfectly proportional. Da Vinci Vitruvian man is an example of the human body depicted with divine proportions. We're not all as symmetrical, but if we were, our body's measurements could be determined using the number phi. Neat, huh?

Would You Rather not be able to taste anything unnaturally sweet (think like processed sugar) OR taste all flavors just sliiightly differently?

That is sort of the case for anyone who has tried Synsepalum dulcificum or "Miracle Berry." Hailing from West Africa, this fruit contains a glycoprotein that binds to your tounge's taste buds, effectively changing their shape (temporarily) and thereby completely changing the way you perceive taste.

Sweet things made from processed sugar are "muted" we could say, but sour flavors, holy cow, they sweet, and "makeyourmouthpuckerbutyoucantstopeatingit" sour. A fascinating fruit, indeed.

Founded in June 1985 by the triumvirate of Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, and Toshio Suzuki, Ghibli emerged like a particularly stubborn radish from the success of "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind." Yes, "Nausicaä" wasn't officially a Ghibli anime production, but it's included in the canon.

This post is your definitive Ghibli guide. It's stuffed with obscure facts to impress that person you're trying to woo at the local anime convention. We've also included a complete list of Ghibli films, because nothing says "I have my life together" quite like encyclopedic knowledge of Japanese animation. So, grab your least comfortable chair and prepare to become the most casually pretentious Ghibli expert in your zip code.

King of Trivia! Play competitively like Miles, and RULE.

Our Party Mix Deck have FIVE fun catergories with three different levels of difficulty. The rules are simple, read the question - the other players choose from the multiple choice answers. Whoever knows, (or guesses, we're not the ones to judge) wins the points for that card.

🔵 Blue Cards = Easy Questions, worth 1 point each
🟡 Yellow Cards = Medium Questions worth 2 points each
🔴 Red Cards = Difficult Questions worth 3 points each

Whoever has the most points when the game ends is deemed supreme keeper of knowledge for the rest of the day but everyone comes away with new fun facts in their noggins, and that's the real prize. 😉
