PACIFIK BROADCASTING Joins the Prestigious National Federation of Community Broadcasters in the US

Pacifik Broadcasting is proud to announce its official membership in the prestigious National Federation of Community Broadcasters (NFCB) in the United States. This significant milestone marks a new chapter for Pacifik Broadcasting as we expand our footprint to set up indigenous language radio stations.

We are excited to begin the groundwork and foundation for 24/7 digital radio stations in Samoan Tongan and Fijian which will be available on the FM and AM dials as well in the United States. This expansion reflects our commitment to celebrating and preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Pacific Islander communities.

As the first Pacific Islander digital broadcast company to join NFCB, Pacifik Broadcasting is honored to be part of an influential network that advocates for community media and offers valuable resources and support to its members. This membership will enable us to enhance our programming, connect with other community broadcasters, and serve our audience better.

Tonga’s new Prime Minister, Dr ‘Aisake Valu Eke

Dr ‘Aisake Valu Eke was elected Prime Minister of Tonga on 24 December 2024, defeating Dr Viliami Uasike Latu, the other candidate, by 16 votes to 8 in a secret ballot. The election resulted from the shock resignation of Siaosi Sovaleni Hu’akavameiliku on 9 December, pre-empting a discussion and ballot on the second Vote of No Confidence (VONC) in his government in the third year of his four-year term.

There are 26 elected members of parliament, 17 Peoples’ Representatives and nine Nobles’ Representatives. On 24 December, one Nobles’ Representative, Prince Kalaniuvalu-Fotofili, was absent and a second, Lord Fakafanua, was officiating as Speaker. The other seven Nobles’ Representatives all voted for the new Prime Minister. This would have disappointed the outgoing Prime Minister because, in his resignation speech on 9 December, with perfunctory apologies to King Tupou VI and the Nobles’ Representatives, he made a direct and passionate appeal to Dr Eke to use his experience and knowledge in setting up his new government and not to rely on the Nobles’ Representatives for support, for it was obvious that they had withdrawn their support for him out of fear of His Majesty. He said, “I had thought that this country had been granted freedom, but it is obvious that there are still limitations placed on that freedom. So, let me be the sacrificial lamb so that your vote can be held in total freedom.”

Nesians Unite (NU) began as a student-led club in Fall 2017, with the intent of creating a community for the Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander (NHPI) populations navigating higher education. The term “Nesians'' refers to the islands that make up Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. Through networking, we were able to provide opportunities and resources for mentorship, self-advocacy, and academic success. Guided by the great ‘Epeli Hau’ofa’s words:

“We should not be defined by the smallness of our islands, but by the greatness of our oceans. We are sea, we are ocean. Oceania is us. We must wake up to this ancient truth and together use it to overturn all hegemonic views that aim ultimately to confine us again, physically and psychologically.

NU empowers NHPI students to embrace their heritage and redefine excellence.
