FEATURE SPOTLIGHT – Meet artist, Cole Jehle (AKA Snacks). Snacks is a Seattle-based watercolor artist whose art focuses on food, beverages, and the service industry itself. Cole moved here from Santa Barbara, CA, but has called the PNW his home for the last 14 years.
After attending culinary school, Cole spent the majority of his professional career in a kitchen or behind a bar. A couple of local Seattle places he has worked at include The Red Door (now Dreamland) and The Backdoor, both located in the Fremont area of Seattle, where he and his wife currently live.
Cole grew up in a multicultural military family with many food centered traditions. On his mom's side, which is Indigenous Mexican and Native American, they make turkey mole tamales. On his father's side, which is Filipino and Irish, lumpia and pork adobo are a staple meal.
Human connection, traditions, and memories are formed around food and its consumption. From a person's favorite food to the meals we share around holidays with loved ones, we all connect with food on some level. These traditions and memories are what Cole tries to render in his paintings. From the warm feeling of much-loved memories of watching his grandparents make tamales during a Tamalada, a traditional tamale-making party usually held before a holiday, to the satisfaction he feels while eating his favorite meal of a cheeseburger and fries, he is constantly trying to evoke those emotional responses with his art.
