Learning how to use Bus and Auxiliary routing properly is one of the first steps in helping you make great mix decisions. The ability to meter per-group element in a mix alone is a powerhouse.

Here is a short video explaining a tiny bit about it, and a free logic mix template to learn from on my site.

Ok. Glad to finally see it drop live because it has been amazing beta testing Ozone 11.

Clarity module is fast at letting me do things that would usually take a bit more time. The new delta function on all the modules(!!!), better UI, and the upward compressor on the maximizer is very well implemented.

I’m in love with the design and concept of this truly unique converter/monitor control, the Grimm UC1.

Understanding the difference between level meters and loudness meters. Loudness isn’t measurable by normal “level” meters. The LUFS is a measurement of Perceptual Loudness, based off the Equal Loudness Contour of human hearing.

I got to mix this clubbable track before mastering it, and used Timeless3 by FabFilter in several unique ways to make the vocals stand out at spacial sections of the song. It’s a FANTASTIC Delay unit, allowing for recreation of classic units and things never before heard!

This is a great pop song by Moroccan star Saidmosker, arranged by producer Hamid Daoussi.

If you missed my intro to this series a few months ago, I’m doing an occasional feature of some of my favorite albums to help spread the love to musicians and engineers.

D'Angelo's "Voodoo" was an invisible taste making album that is still affecting the sonic landscape 22 years later. When I first heard this record, I had to stop everything, and sit down on the floor and listen on repeat to parse out everything that makes it feel so huge. It’s a masterpiece of mix engineering by Russell Elevado, and the performances are nothing short of ridiculous. If you haven’t heard it, please give it a listen.

I’m upping my ADC game!

So many albums I’ve heard over the years that have blown me away sonically and/or impacted me emotionally, have been mastered through this converter. They impart a level of clarity and detail in the space of the mix, & allow going crazy loud without sounding squished! It’s almost like cheating. I don’t even have to think about it when I run a mix back into the Lavry from the outboard.

This series of converters does analog to digital conversions differently than just about any other box I’ve ever heard. It uses a ladder resistor scheme instead of the common delta sigma modulators that most ADC’s utilize.

There are just SO MANY records that have been mastered through these Lavry gold series converters that I’ve been super impressed with. You should hear what it does to yours.

I’ve been working with Tyler Fortier for almost 20 years now and it’s always a lesson in minimalism for me. He has a definitive vision so I don’t want to take it too far away from that. As I’ve gotten better at mastering over the years, sometimes knowing when to get out of the way is the best thing you can do.

Track is Way Back to You by Tyler’s band Last Year’s Man.

It was one of the greatest discoveries of my life, that I truly love teaching audio engineering. Can’t believe I’ve been doing it for 20 years already.

Because the concepts aren’t easily understood at first glance and I’ve had so many excellent questions from students over the years... I’ve had to get creative and come up with several ways to explain everything depending on how each person learns. I want everyone to come out of this feeling like they understand every important aspect of sound and how to work with it.

My Level One audio engineering classes are starting the first week of February, live on Zoom, recorded so you can re-watch as many times as you’d like. You don’t need any audio equipment to take this class! Click the link below to sign up, or shoot me a message any time.

It’s looking like I’ll have a new class session starting in February, possibly March. Most likely it’ll be a watch at your own pace series, which students have really enjoyed in the past. This also makes a great gift for any audiophiles in your life! If this is something you’re interested in, make sure you’re on my email list to get the details. This was my first time working with this band and was stoked to get an already great mix to pump up. I used a combination of different compressors to emphasize the rhythmic components - mainly driving into the API 2500.
