OK, Lebanon. Two theories, first seems to be popular in the press. This suggests that a Golden Appolo company in Taiwan licensed a company in Hungary to manufacture pagers etc, the Hungarian company was a Mossad front, and they installed plastic explosives and detonators into the devices, then, somehow, got them to Hezbollah activists. Having hacked Hezbollah security, Mossad had secured the phone numbers of Hezbollah, and then, one day, reached out and touched somebody.

The other explanation shares the hacking - but in this view the real story is that Mossad never touched the pagers, phones, radios. Instead, having secured the phone numbers, they used software that instructed the device's batteries to overheat, causing lithium battery explosions.

The first theory suggests that either most devices like this in Lebanon are b***ytrapped, because otherwise how could you guarantee that your targets were carrying them? How could you guarantee someone didn't break their device and open it up finding a little surprise? The part of this theory that doesn't stand up to scrutiny is how Mossad could get b***y trapped phones into the hands of their targets.

If there is a way to send a signal that can instruct a device to overheat its own battery, then all you need is the phone number of your target, the lithium battery is all the explosive you need. We'll get back to the implications if this is true.

One thing stands out. As a new method of warfare this is positively brilliant. The tactical timing is very odd. And it was so fundamentally stupid it leaves one breathless.

Brilliant, because the ability to both attack anyone whose phone # you can get, to make a whole technology toxic and dangerous which can shut down enemy communications - would you carry a phone or pager if you feared it might detonate? Bombardment breaks phone lines, microwave transmission can be detected and intercepted, allowing the enemy to target your location and to listen in.

The timing - if this had happened as the IDF's tanks rolled over the Lebanese border, which seems in the offing, it would totally disrupt Hezbollah communications at a vital moment. This trick works best the first time it is used. IF the pagers were b***ytrapped, you can expect every pager in Lebanon is being carefully inspected, and probably replaced with carefully checked devices. Countermeasures will be taken. So why did Mossad show its hand prematurely?

Finally, the implications if the explosions were battery explosions, not plastic explosives. Oh boy. If the Israelis can figure out how to send a signal to a personal electronic device that will cause its battery to blow up in someone's pocket, depend on it - not only every government in the world has some geeks working on how to duplicate the trick (as well as how to protect devices from such hacking), but so will thousands of young guys in their basement apartments. If you are trying to use this trick for a targeted assassination, you need the number of the device you want to blow. But if you don't care who the target is, you could, say, generate random phone numbers from a computer. Any number you want. Can you see where this goes? "Hello, is this the White House? Please deposit 500 million in bit coin in this offshore bank account, say in the next half hour, or what is about to happen will happen again tomorrow. Bye." And five minutes later 10,000 randomly selected cell phones blow up in people's back pockets, shirt pockets, on the end of selfie sticks, wherever.

Our interconnected technical age... may be about to strangle in its own network. What sort of web have we woven?

Anyone else having internet trouble today? Twice, the 1st for 2 1/2 hours, very slow, or not working at all. Just me??

And now, for something completely different: a disturbance in the force.

I was just notified, I will be a member of the Eugene Police Commission as of next month, a four year term. Your input (if informed) will be appreciated. Understand, the role of the PoCo as its called is to advise the chief on policy. Each item of policy must be renewed every three years, so it is a constant process of review and if appropriate, offering recommendations for changes.

This will be very interesting.

Governors of 25 states have proclaimed they "stand in solidarity" with Texas in defying the Federal government. The Republican Party (oh, the irony, lost on those ignorant of US history) is going to support a man for president who attempted to overturn the result of the last election by a violent insurrection.

I think it is well past time the Federal government nationalizes the Texas National Guard (not state militia, NATIONAL Guard) and arrests its governor. Also, could Merrick Garland spare a moment of his busy day to attend to the investigation, indictment, arrest, trial and conviction of those GOP members of Congress who were part of aiding and abetting the January 6 uprising? And those who financed it?

Last civil war was fought with muzzle loaders and black powder. Cost us half a million lives. Lets not let it go that far, please.

Here's a picture from 22 years ago, in Columbus OH, at the Origins convention, a panel discussion from the War College. I have no recollection what this one was about (I was co-dean of the War College for years and ran 40 events during the weekend - panels, lectures, seminars, with historians and game designers.) On the far left of the picture is Frank Chadwick, arguably the best wargame designer ever, an unknown, my deeply lamented brother and friend, Dr. John Prados, myself, and some other unknown. Ah... once we were young, and wargamers...

Anyone remember who the two unknowns were or what this discussion was about? Military history, for sure, but...

Counting down... We have been told by the printer that Korsun Pocket 2 will be printed, die cut, collated, packed, and shipped by 10 January. That's 5 days. Hey, it only took 15 years, we can wait another 5 days, right? Shipping time to Oakland, CA is promised as 20 days. So. By February, they'll be here. Sorry it took so long...

11/14/2022

If you placed a preorder with Pacific Rim, whether last month or 7 years ago, watch your inbox this week. Just sayin...

We have a date!! The printer has informed us that they expect to complete the 4 prototypes (all printed, will take until then to do the die cutting - holiday and Covid problems) by 22 February and ship. When we get 'em, 3 for review, 1 for proofing, we will await the reviewers getting the word out, and await about 150 more commitments to buy at $225 each (free US shipping). When they come in, Jeff will tell the printer, "GO!" and it will happen,.

Also learned today that like KP 1st edition, that had a union label (unlike any other wargame I've seen), KP 2 will be printed in a union shop.

11/13/2021

For what its worth, all of Korsun Pocket 2 is at the printer's. We should be receiving 4 prototypes to show you sometime... assuming no war in the South China Sea, no break in relations with our largest trading partner, a new Covid variant doesn't cause the country to close, and one or two other potential nuisances... soon. Meanwhile, get those commitments coming in to PacRim.

06/30/2021

Should anyone be following this page, this is to give you an update on Korsun Pocket, 2nd Edition (KP 2). There is a little confusion between printer and publisher about the grid for the countersheets. This problem is apparently exacerbated by the language differences, and the fact that the two cannot sit down at a table together and get it all clear. Electronic communications, even with passing pictures back and forth, just ain't the same.

We WILL get this resolved shortly. Worst case - we end up having to include a bunch of extra markers. Would that break your heart?

The suspense is killing me, until this is resolved we won't get the prototypes, until we get the prototypes, no youTube reviews, until the reviews go out, we probably won't get the additional 100 - 120 commitments we need to publish.

It will all happen, it just moves like January molasses. Jeff's health, and having to move his house, are not speeding the process, alas. Keep him in your thoughts.

So PacRim has sent off the graphics for the game to 6 printers to solicit bids. Part of the deal will be for four (4) prototype copies, complete in every aspect, to be printed, die cut, collated and shipped. I get one, Jeff gets one, two go to reviewers, and will be reviewed online so you can hear about and see what is in the box.

That will leave it up to you. If you want a copy at the reduced price ($225 vs $300) you need to contact PacRim to make known your commitment to buy. You do NOT turn over your credit card info. Instead, when the game is sent off to be printed, you will be sent a special code to enter when you order from PacRim. This will get you the discount, and the game, in that order.

It will have a Vassal module I believe. We've done our part, now its time for you to do yours. One, two, you know what to do...
