Important conversation:
Gather with fellow academics, researchers, artists, designers, technologists, and architects to discuss the re-emergence of a textile-based education as part of a vibrant and future-facing pedagogy. This inaugural half-day conference will kick off a regional focus on the role of textiles in contemporary education. Hosted by UCLA's Department of Design Media Arts,Thinking Through Textiles: Future Pedagogies will explore the intersections of aesthetics, textile technique, cross-disciplinary studies, and new material insights, while introducing opportunities for collaborative engagement.

Exciting to hear about the construction of this treasured book at the Los Angeles Public Library.
Has anyone had the opportunity to go see this?

"Kitty Maryatt, educator and proprietor of Two Hands Press, located in Playa Vista, California, discusses her spectacular recreation of the Blaise Cendrars and Sonia Delaunay 1913 publication, La Prose du Transsibérien. This beautiful artists’ book is a recent addition to the Book Arts Collection. Printed by letterpress with hand-painted pochoir, the book needs an extra set of hands to open it up and display the art and poem as one long piece. "

Why Not Joomchi? with Jiyoung Chung
Mon, Feb 24, 2025, 9:00 AM EST – Fri, Feb 28, 2025

Joomchi is a unique Korean traditional way of making textured handmade paper using water and eager hands. The terminology originated from the meaning, “making a Joomoney (Pouch)”. The record says that the Koreans started making Joomchi in the Goryeo Dynasty, A.D.918 – 1392. A few remaining Korean treasures are made with this technique: purses, folding pouches, outfits for rain, etc. Joomchi creates strong, textural, and painterly surfaces by layering and agitating Hanji (Korean mulberry papers), which are not easy to rip/tear and create a locking surface: As time goes on, the surface becomes more and more elegant and aged-looking, surfaces sometimes look like leather.

This class offers students the opportunity to become acquainted with its history, usage, and role in Korean society, as well as the hands-on techniques and reinterpreted adaptations into contemporary art form.

Joomchi’s usages are diverse and can be incorporated into surface design, collage, new ways of drawing, one-of-a-kind book art, wearable, unconventional body ornament, or sculptural object: 2-D & 3D functional or fine art-oriented works. The possibilities are endless!

"Barns Have Stories" show announcement!
I'm joining master fiber artist Susan Feller of Augusta, W.Va., for a multimedia exhibition set to open on March 8 at the Grasshopper Gallery at Lost River Trading Post, located in Wardensville, W.Va., at 295 E. Main St. The exhibit will be on display until April 27.
"Barns have Stories" was inspired as Susan observed the methodical deconstruction of a large barn in Augusta, W.Va. over a period of several weeks. This experience drew Susan’s attention to other barns in the area, in various states of repair, as she looked at their design, their materials, their engineering, and their wear.

Susan invited me to contribute work to the exhibit because of my interest in painting rural landscapes and subjects. I'm also a child of farm life and spent many days hanging around barns and farm sheds at my grandparents' and parents' farms, so I feel a deep appreciation for these structures.

In coming days I'll share more about the work Susan and I are creating for the exhibit, as well as some sneak peaks at my paintings.

You can also follow Susan's creative process (and see what she is working on for the show) at Susan L. Feller, Artwools

So many great workshops with top-caliber teachers!!

I know there are a lot of places in the US that are freezing, however, temperatures here in Florida have gne back up into the mid 70's and low 80s - so call your fiber bestie and make plans for a "fiber-cation" escape!

David van Buskirk, One of the artists in our Winter Issue, shares the inspiration behind his artwork in his email newsletter today. He talks about a rafting trip on the Colorado River in 2021 that occasioned my inspiration to undertake the production of Out on a Limb (Elves Chasm), which embodies the undulating rock formations and variegated color contrasts found in the Grand Canyon. Adapting a loom structure that’s been in existence since prehistoric times, my use of hand weaving to realize this unique work’s form and structure served as a welcome antidote to my many years as a professional textile designer producing complex dobby weaves for the textile industry on a computerized loom.

MULTI MEDIA FIBER with Betty Busby
Mon, Mar 10, 2025, 9:00 AM EDT – Fri, Mar 14, 2025, 4:00 PM EDT

ONLY 1 space left!

For several years Betty has been exploring the use of various nonwoven materials in her fiber art. They have been a wonderful addition to traditional fabrics, extending the range of expression that can be achieved.

The class will include samples of different types of non woven materials, ways to produce images with them, and methods to incorporate them to extend the range of expression that can be achieved with traditional fabrics.

In addition, Betty has developed new ways of painting fabrics. Students can make samples using her methods and materials, and combine them with the nonwovens as desired.

She will bring her electric cutting machine and demonstrate its use with both the non wovens and vinyl. Instruction on its use and design features will be included.

The aim of the class is to give each student many exciting ideas to experiment with.
