8 months ago my mom, the incredible Susan Schenk who is FIERCELY independent and unbelievably active, devolved from walking to barely being able to stand by herself over the course of a week. We knew that something was wrong, but couldn't have imagined the result: an emergency surgery that left my mom with multiple vertebrate fused in her spine and in a wheelchair.
Anyone who has met Susan knows she is a force of nature; she opened up her own bakery, The Bakery Depot during the pandemic, has been the head chef for Temple Shalom for 20 years, is an avid cyclist and rarely, if ever, stops moving. Now, my mom is relearning everything: how to walk on her own, how to cook... the list goes on. We recently learned that her insurance will also no longer cover her occupational and physical therapy. Without insurance, we cannot afford to pay for these services.
After much deliberation, my family and I are seeking donations to help pay for my mom's medical bills and to purchase her a recumbent bike. Without physical therapy, her doctors have recommended a recumbent as the best way for her to continue to build her strength while she continues to work on walking, but this bike and these medical bills are EXPENSIVE. I have been traveling back to Colorado as often as I can to help, but because I live in Oregon I can only do so much.
If you've ever met my mom, you know she is an incredibly kind, caring and hardworking woman who has been a part of the Colorado Springs community for more than 30 years. Any and all donations to help her and my family would be greatly appreciated. My dad the owner of Eon Studios, a small local screen printing business, has been working night and day to pay for these bills, but it is not enough.
