Issue #9 of Afterglow is almost done! Just finished the last music review and I am almost ready to fire up the Risograph and start printing! I’m super proud of how issue 9 is coming out and this is an awesome album as well! Here is the review:

Chimes of Bayonets: replicator, 2024, 12” LP,

“Chimes of Bayonets” immediately brings to mind the band “Unwound” with the decidedly post rock sound. Chimes are not as noisy and more tightly structured though, building a solid and intentional soundscape that keeps all the unpredictability and jabbing aggression that attracts people to post rock and post hardcore. The vocals keep a consistent melodic style and the songs flow together well. You don’t hear the screaming sections from other post rock bands and that is totally fine with me. “Replicator” should impress the educated crowd while also remaining accessible for listeners who may be new to the genre.

I am a print nerd, so I was very impressed by the album artwork and insert, which are beautifully printed and have great texture. For the audio nerd, they list info about the Teac and Tascam tape equipment used in recording. The sound quality here is very impressive. This is a well mastered album with a tight group of musicians. The bass tone is perfect and the drumming is tight with a lot of creative rhythms. The guitar is sharp and poignant without being overbearing. The unpredictable song structures lead you on a wild and enjoyable ride throughout the whole album. Highly recommended for everyone, especially fans of “Slint”, “Tortoise”,”Unwound”, and “Fugazi”.

Bazooka Joe: Pastors Of Muppets/ Send In The Klowns (Cassette, 2024, Broken Sound Tapes)

Originally released in 1988 and 1989 on 7” vinyl , this tape hits hard all the way through. I had never heard of Bazooka Joe previously, so this was a real treat for me. Reminiscent of greats like “7 Seconds”, “D.I.”, and “The Adolescents”. You really have it all here. The vocals are heavy but comprehensible. The lyrics are raw and insightful. The music is fast, varied, and unpredictable. This reminds me of the freedom of making your own music and brings about a yearning for the days when I was young, wild, and playing punk rock. A great blast from the past. Highly recommended!

Brutal Jr. is a hard hitting synth punk band. The three tracks here really run the gamut musically. It’s a combination of elements from a variety of genres including punk, metal, electronic, and industrial. It starts out with an audio sample leading into some rave sounding music, that becomes more rock and roll when the vocals enter and then heavier as the guitar takes over and leads to more aggressive vocals, then back to the electronic edge. The album keeps this rollercoaster of variety throughout and although the album goes quick, there’s never a dull moment.

Melodic female vocals flow over an experimental industrial soundscape, taking the listener in all sorts of directions. Music like this is hard to classify. I’m often not really into industrial or synth pop type stuff, but luckily these are really good tunes. The music is decidedly fuzzy and rough on the edges. The lyrics are often audibly and artfully sung, but dig into some unique distortions as well. I can’t make out every word, but it is definitely decipherable.

There is a punk edge and discussions of patriarchies and other overarching systems and the corruption involved. I’ve never heard anything like this release, and that gives it big points in my book. I think the most impressive thing is the change in atmosphere it brings about. I imagine being at a punk garage in the future or like an 80’s punker goth rave. It makes you feel like you are stepping into another world where the same rules do not exist. Electronic sounds can have rhythm or be harsh noises, drums don’t need to always sound like drums, you can dance, or look at your feet, or crawl into a corner and assume the fetal position. What you perceive of reality does not have to be real. If for nothing else, I think everyone should check it out just to experience that shift in reality.

I often think of music or zines as artifacts, documents of a piece of history. The rarer the occurrence, the more significant the artifact. The songs released by Funny Goofy Records are definitely artifacts in the highest order. There is no digital copy, the physical copies are strictly limited to 100 copies, and once they are gone, they are gone. Vol.2 Features indie rockers “Softjaw” and “Clown Sounds” with front cover art by Jackson. Get your copy NOW.

has clean and catchy vocals over fuzzy guitar and percussion that gets your foot tapping. The verse comes in quickly and then goes back to the chorus of “Don’t go walking out..on me”. This leads to a nice breakdown section that opens up the sound to a build up that drops us back into the chorus. A quick and uniquely crafted song that stays interesting throughout.

Clown Sounds have a catchy bright rock and roll tone driven by impactful lyrics. The lyrics are delivered with emotion and a p***y edge that I’m fond of. The lyrical style is unique, but kind of reminds me of how Mick Jagger delivers his vocals, with a lot of unique emphasis on certain sounds. The guitar is bright and clear with some nice twangy sections that give it a slight rockabilly edge. These tones contrast nicely with the brighter guitar segments. This has the sound of a tight group that enjoys what they are doing.
