Issue #9 of Afterglow is almost done! Just finished the last music review and I am almost ready to fire up the Risograph and start printing! I’m super proud of how issue 9 is coming out and this is an awesome album as well! Here is the review:
Chimes of Bayonets: replicator, 2024, 12” LP,
“Chimes of Bayonets” immediately brings to mind the band “Unwound” with the decidedly post rock sound. Chimes are not as noisy and more tightly structured though, building a solid and intentional soundscape that keeps all the unpredictability and jabbing aggression that attracts people to post rock and post hardcore. The vocals keep a consistent melodic style and the songs flow together well. You don’t hear the screaming sections from other post rock bands and that is totally fine with me. “Replicator” should impress the educated crowd while also remaining accessible for listeners who may be new to the genre.
I am a print nerd, so I was very impressed by the album artwork and insert, which are beautifully printed and have great texture. For the audio nerd, they list info about the Teac and Tascam tape equipment used in recording. The sound quality here is very impressive. This is a well mastered album with a tight group of musicians. The bass tone is perfect and the drumming is tight with a lot of creative rhythms. The guitar is sharp and poignant without being overbearing. The unpredictable song structures lead you on a wild and enjoyable ride throughout the whole album. Highly recommended for everyone, especially fans of “Slint”, “Tortoise”,”Unwound”, and “Fugazi”.
