So, I have experimented with doing something that most would say is ill advised. Some would even say it is stupid. You'd be totally correct in saying so, and I'm sure it will bite me in the ass eventually, but I accept that.
I've had a couple different touring bands come through my space already, which has been awesome! I love giving people a tour of the facility, and the gear, when they ask! I've let a couple people try stuff out just because, and it's been fun to nerd out with them over playing pieces of gear that are not easy to get your hands on.
The thing that I have been doing that is actually risky though is.....allowing people to purchase gear off of me while on tour, and having them pay me later. I can already hear people telling me I'm crazy, and I get it. Trust me, I get it.
BUT - it honestly makes me super happy to be able to facilitate gear deals with bands that are on tour, need the gear FOR tour, but just don't have the means to pay for it up front. And so far? I'm 4 for 4 on actually being paid what I'm owed. Some of these people are making payments as they get the money, which is fine by me.
I generally feel like I'm a pretty good judge of character. I can usually sense almost immediately whether someone is super chill, or whether they're a s**t bag. Every time I've trusted my gut, I've been right. Good or bad. So I felt confident that the people who asked me to do these deals would pay up, and thankfully, they didn't let me down. Obviously, this is a case by case basis and I certainly ain't doing it with items of SERIOUS value. But a couple, few hundred dollars to mkae someone's tour easier/better is a risk I'm willing to take.
All this to say - I'm glad I'm in a position to be able to help other people. For the past few years, people have talked all sorts of craziness about me being a gear hoarder who just sits in his basement and keeps good equipment out of the hands of "people who will give it the love it deserves (witchya CORNY ASS)" and I basically just laughed it off, knowing that wasn't the case.
I'm working behind the scenes to expand the services that I can offer to the local music community. My aim is to eventually be a one stop shop for almost anything a musician could need. Gear, venue, live portable sound, photo, video, recording, maybe even eventually lessons (NOT given by me) all at prices that local musicians in small bands can actualy stomach.
Anyways, sorry for the rant. I'm just always happy when people help to restore my faith in......people. Stay Belligerent.
