Grześ Loves Eurovision: An American Obsessed

Grześ Loves Eurovision: An American Obsessed Welcome to Grześ ♡ Eurovision! I'll be posting my favorites from my 13 years of enjoying this international song festival that baffles my all my friends!

I have been obsessed with this contest since 2003 when my favorite band at the time, t.A.T.u., announced they'd be representing their country at something called "Eurovision." At the time, as an American who'd never left the continent (at the time), I had no clue what Eurovision was. At first I thought it'd be like American Idol but I was shocked to discover it's so much more than a singing contes

t. In fact, it's not a singing contest. It's a gala, a camp, colorful pageant of European culture. Growing up in a small rural town, I had never seen anything like it but as it turned out, I wasn't the only one in my family familiar with the contest. In fact, when I told my mother about it she knew exactly what I was on about! Imagine my shock to learn that my own mother, who was an exchange student in Umeå, Sweden in 1974, had watched one of the most historic and important Eurovision Song Contests in history! She was there to see the launch of the massive career of ABBA as they won the song contest for her host country. I was born to be a Eurovision fan, it must've been fate for such a coincidence to occur. Little did I know 13 years ago, I was watching the last classic Eurovision before the contest expanded into something even bigger! 2004 was the start of a new Eurovision, with semi-finals, and more countries than ever! I was lucky enough to be in Europe to watch Ruslana win for Ukraine. I even voted for her from my hotel room. I feel a deep connection to Europe, as a European-American, I feel it's important to know where my people came from and the Eurovision Song Contest gives me a glimpse of the music, dance and style of the varied cultures of Europe. So, join me as I gush about the event I wait each year!
