Great Performances Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert
Friday, August 23, 9 p.m.

Each summer, the world-renowned Vienna Philharmonic is joined by a guest soloist to perform an enchanting open-air concert under the direction of a guest conductor from the magnificent gardens of Austria’s Imperial Schonbrunn Palace, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. The 2024 concert will be conducted by Boston Symphony Orchestra Music Director Andris Nelsons, with acclaimed international opera star Lise Davidsen as soloist.

“Jazz is the pursuit of a collective freedom.”

This morning, Chautauqua welcomed the return of Wynton Marsalis to the Amphitheater stage as he opened our week on “Rising Together: Our Century of Creativity and Collaboration with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.” His keynote address, “Speaking a Common Language,” delved into the making — and ever-resonating themes — of his epic jazz symphony All Rise.

His speech explored how jazz transcends cultural and racial boundaries as a unifying musical force, reflecting broader themes of collective experience and the challenges of integrating diverse musical traditions into a cohesive narrative.
