On this day in Texas history...

Recall the story of Texas Ranger John Reid, aka the Lone Ranger, the only survivor of a deadly ambush that took the lives of his fellow Rangers.

On January 29, 1933, he made his first appearance as the Lone Ranger at radio station WXYZ in Detroit, Michigan, wearing that iconic black mask and a hearty Hi-O Silver, away!

In Janaury of 1839, the Congress of the Republic of Texas passed a Homestead Act, designed to encourage home ownership and debt protection.

It guaranteed every citizen or head of family in the Republic "fifty acres of land or one town lot, including his or her homestead, and improvements not exceeding five hundred dollars in value."

Audie Murphy, a Texan native and the most decorated American soldier earned the Medal of Honor on this day in 1945. He received 33 awards and decorations during World War II. After the war, he became an actor, songwriter, and businessman. Murphy died in a plane crash in 1971 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

January 24, 1848

Sam Houston was sworn in as one of the first two U.S. Senators from the new State of Texas. (The other was Thomas Rusk.) Sam wrote home that he and Rusk were "the tallest men in the Senate." Gotta love it.
