Recall the story of Texas Ranger John Reid, aka the Lone Ranger, the only survivor of a deadly ambush that took the lives of his fellow Rangers.

On January 29, 1933, he made his first appearance as the Lone Ranger at radio station WXYZ in Detroit, Michigan, wearing that iconic black mask and a hearty Hi-O Silver, away!

Audie Murphy, a Texan native and the most decorated American soldier earned the Medal of Honor on this day in 1945. He received 33 awards and decorations during World War II. Sam Houston was sworn in as one of the first two U.S. Senators from the new State of Texas. (The other was Thomas Rusk.) Sam wrote home that he and Rusk were "the tallest men in the Senate." Gotta love it.
