Today is the 162nd birthday of the establishment of Lyon County, Kansas!

On February 5, 1862, Lyon County was established from the county formerly known as Breckinridge County. The name was changed to honor General Nathaniel Lyon who was killed at the Battle of Wilsonโ€™s Creek in Missouri during the Civil War on August 10, 1861. General Lyon was the first Union General to die in the Civil War.

Lyon County gained a lot of trade from the Santa Fe Trail going through it during the Pikeโ€™s Peak gold rush. Charles H. Withington saw the potential for trade and opened the first mercantile store in Kansas on the Santa Fe Trail. Later a post office named Allen was added, and then the store was expanded to also include a hotel and mail station. Charles then gained additional revenue by building a toll bridge over 142 Creek. He continued operating his store until 1866 when the railroad ended the Santa Fe Trail trade in the area.

The Santa Fe Trail traversing through Lyon County, and the forethought of Charles Withington were some of the things that were instrumental in creating the Lyon County that we know today. Lyon County now has nine towns: Admire, Allen, Americus, Bushong, Emporia (County Seat), Hartford, Neosho Rapids, Olpe, and Reading, as well as the two unincorporated towns of Miller and Plymouth. Additionally, Lyon County has 11 townships: Agnes City, Americus, Center, Elmendaro, Emporia, Fremont, Ivy, Jackson, Pike, Reading, and Waterloo, as well as having three school districts: USD #251, USD #252, and USD #253, as well as Emporia State University and the Flint Hills Technical College.

There is so much history in Lyon County - check out the Lyon County History Center for more information!

Happy establishment Birthday Lyon County!
