The Flower Mound Fire Department is saddened by the loss of Firefighter/Paramedic G. Wade Cannon. Firefighter Cannon passed away last night after a valiant battle with occupational colon cancer. Firefighter Cannon was 33 years old and served the Town of Flower Mound for 6.5 years. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

Additional details regarding the Line of Duty memorial service will be released at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made in Wade’s name to organizations that were near and dear to them during their cancer battle. Please consider donating to the Brent Lewis Bridges Foundation and Michael's Memories.

Quinlan ISD School Threat

Ford High School

September 11, 2022

Today district officials were notified of a threat to
school safety made through social media. The
Quinlan ISD Police Department and campus
administrators have been investigating the
situation this afternoon. Through this process, it
was determined that the source of the threat was
a QISD student. As such, consequences will be
applied to the fullest extent allowed by the Code
of Conduct and any applicable laws.

All campuses will continue to have a visible police
presence on campus tomorrow.
Parents, please continue to reinforce with your
children the importance of immediately reporting
such incidences to campus administrators or
campus police officers. Student safety is always
a top priority.

in 1942, Mess Attendant 1st Class Charles Jackson French swam through shark-infested waters for several hours while towing a raft carrying 15 of his wounded shipmates to safety after USS Gregory was sunk near Guadalcanal. "The Human Tugboat" received a letter of commendation from ADM William Halsey for his actions. In 2022, he was posthumously awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal. A rescue swimming training pool at Naval Base San Diego is named in his honor.

Traces of Texas reader Steve Koncaba took this photo of the Battleship Texas in dry dock and was kind enough to send it in. It's sort of strange seeing what lay under the water's surface after having seen it in hundreds of photos but never with the keel exposed. Really cool. I'm so glad to see that it will be preserved.

The time an American battleship flooded itself…on purpose: Operation Overlord, the invasion of Normandy, D-Day. Texas sailed with the Western Taskforce for Normandy on June 3, 1944. On June 6, in 34 minutes, Texas had fired 255 14-inch shells into Pointe du Hoc. As allied forces pushed off the beach, Texas moved closer to shore to support them. Originally stationed 12,000 yards offshore, she moved to just 3,000 yards from the beach. On June 7 and 8, she continued to bombard German positions. She was forced to return to England to rearm and was on station off of France again on June 11. By June 15 though, allied forces had pushed so far inland that their targets were now out of Texas’ range. In order to fulfill the requested fire missions, Texas’ crew had to get creative.
The ship’s massive 14-inch guns did not have the elevation required to lob their shots as far inland as the invasion forces needed. So, if the guns facing port couldn’t be raised any further, then the starboard side needed to be lowered. The starboard torpedo blister, a sponson on the hull below of the waterline, was flooded with water. This listed Texas two degrees to starboard and gave her main batteries enough elevation to complete the fire mission.

The Battleship Texas was commissioned in 1914 and served in World War I. In World War II, The Texas escorted convoys across the Atlantic and fought in North Africa, Normandy, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.
In 1948, the Battleship Texas was decommissioned, earning a total of five battle stars.
Today, this historic ship was moved from Houston to Galveston for some much-needed restoration.

USS Texas on her way to dry dock and restoration this morning. She'll be in Galveston during repairs. Her final destination has not been determined yet. Glad to see this dreadnought being brought back to her full glory!

A Step by Step Guide to Becoming Self-Sufficient

08/28/2022

TROPICAL UPDATE 🌀 After the quietest stretch in decades across the Atlantic (which I've been loving), we now have four areas to watch and monitor as we approach the peak of the season.

THE LATEST: The area in red, classified as Tropical Disturbance 91L, currently has a high chance of development as it moves across the Atlantic. The road ahead, however, is not going to be easy. It has to battle dry air in its path this week. If it can overcome it, next name up is Danielle.

POTENTIAL TRACK: Tropical Disturbance 91L (red) will likely be just north of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola by next weekend. Where it goes beyond that is still too early to determine. Some models have it heading close to Florida, some have it curving north before. Until it develops, models won't get a good handle on where it goes. In the meantime, we're just in monitor mode. Don't stress yourself out over it at this point. You can always trust me and WINK to keep you updated without the hype. Have a nice week ahead everyone!
