The estate of Carol Glowe, a Mentor resident who worked for Cleveland Lincoln Electric for 40 years before her death in 2022, allowed the nonprofit to purchase three new wheelchair-accessible vans, which it received at the beginning of September. The estate totaled $10 million, divided between 10 local nonprofits including Our Lady of the Wayside.

The nonprofit, which provides transportation and day programming for children and adults with developmental disabilities, received $1 million from the estate of Carol Glowe, a Mentor resident who died in 2022. On Thursday, Daniel Valdez, representing Golden State Homes, said the work needed on the Oakdale home was extensive, including a roof, new flooring throughout the building and stairs up to one of the duplex’s units, along with complete kitchen and bath remodels.

Lorain's Demolition Board of Appeals denied a stay of demolition for 1756 Oakdale Ave. Thursday morning, despite the owner's request for more time to work on the property.

Messages were left for Schippel on Thursday seeking comment. When asked why she resigned, Trustee Jason Monschein said he was "given thoughts and opinions on that, but no specifics I'll address," he said. A copy of her resignation letter has been requested from the township.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Effective Thursday, there is a new traffic light and traffic pattern change at Broad Street and Cedar Street/Second Street in Elyria.
For those traveling east on Broad Street, away from downtown, Broad Street has a left lane and a straight/right lane. If turning left, you must yield to oncoming traffic.

Starting Monday, every Elyria Schools student will be eligible for free breakfast and lunch as the district is part of the Community Eligibility Provision of the National School Lunch Program.

The CEP allows eligible districts to provide free breakfast and lunch at no cost to students, and without families needing to apply for the program.

“It kinda didn’t feel real,” Jesse Parker said. “It felt surreal to be undefeated going into the second day.”

Jesse Parker, 31, one of 1,147 competitors in the Master Division went undefeated in 14 rounds, making it to the Top Eight. His third place win earned him $20,000, some valuable swag and an automatic invitation to the World Tournament in California next year.

Ron Kear, an 83-year-old Avon resident, has been volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit that provides housing for low-income families, since 1997.

"He was always trying to be innovative" she said. "One of the things I credit him with is the focus he put on focusing on the child and making decisions based on the best interests of the child."

Arrangements were being handled by the Snyder-Rodman Funeral Center in Delaware, according to his published obituary.

Tyaesha Hunter, 32, was sentenced to 24 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Benita Pearson, and ordered to pay $797 in restitution and $100 in fines, according to federal court records. The U.S. Attorney's Office asked for "a sentence on the low end" of federal sentencing guidelines given Hunter's "limited" criminal history, according to court records.

Siren’s Curse -- the tallest, fastest and longest “tilt” roller coaster in North America -- will feature a multimedia sensory experience as riders ascend an old 160-foot-tall Lake Erie shipping crane tower. Riders will then experience what a statement from the park referred to as its signature moment, a dead stop on a "broken off" section of track, which will slowly tilt the entire train into a 90-degree vertical position, where riders can peer straight down to what appears to be open space.

The 2,966-foot-long Siren's Curse will feature 13 weightless elements, two 260-degree, zero-gravity barreled rolls and a high-speed "triple-down" element.

Robert Gargasz, attorney for one of the local property owners, called the ditch petition "unlawful" and asked the board to "'kill off' this illegal assault" on his client's property "to prevent further injustice and injury and damages to themselves by your conduct and that of your agents."

The Brown Ditch Lateral in the 14700 block of Quarry Road is overgrown and floods every few years, neighboring property owners said Tuesday, and the county has been designing plans to deal with it for at least four years.
