Counter-clockwise flow on the north side of an area of low pressure will continue to bring plenty of rain and cloud cover into the area. The clouds and rain will help keep temperatures on the cool side for this time of year.

You will need a coat, a rain coat, and an umbrella this Memorial Day weekend. Look for a cold, damp, Memorial Day weekend! The combination of an upper low lingering over the area for several days, a surface low moving northwest from the Southeast U.S. coast and cold high pressure to our northeast will bring an extended period of cold, wet weather to the region starting today, but especially Sunday through Monday. Temperatures will average well below normal through Monday mostly in the 50s for highs with some 40s in the mountains! Gusty northeast winds will add to the chill. It won't feel much like late May should! Rainfall will be widespread and heavy at times, especially along the Blue Ridge of western North Carolina through southwest Virginia where several inches of rain are possible through Monday.

A backdoor cold front will slowly move south across the area on Thursday. A few showers will develop in the mountains Thursday afternoon. High temperatures Thursday will range from the lower 60s in the northern mountains to the mid 70s along the southern Blue ridge. Get your latest forecast at https://www.weather.gov/rnk/

Even though we had some snow in parts of the forecast area early this month, I think we can safely declare that the snow season is now over for the 2022-2023 winter? How did it compare to prior years? Well, clearly it was one of the least snowiest winters in history across the board! Not even one of our official climate stations measured 10 inches of snow this past winter! Check out the table below for additional details.

Looking forward to future winters the odds are very unlikely that we would see another winter with this low or an even lower amount of snow. But, you never know!

Cooler today with widespread cloudiness, along with a few isolated showers. The rain showers will be mainly confined to the mountains. Drier and warmer tomorrow, but still mostly cloudy.

Isolated showers are likely over the western Appalachians, with a slight chance for storms from southeast WV through far southwest VA, into northwest NC. Skies will be mostly cloudy, keeping temps in the upper 60s, but any areas that see some breaks could warm up quickly.

05/14/2023

Showers, with potential thunderstorms, are possible along and west of the Blue Ridge today. Skies will be mostly cloudy for the mountains, but the Piedmont should see more sun. Temperatures will be near normal, with highs in the low to mid 70s.

A backdoor front will drop south across our region tonight. Showers will slowly diminish with the loss of solar heating. Patchy fog develops overnight into Sunday morning. Low temperatures will range from the mid 50s in the mountains to the lower 60s in the Piedmont.

Today will be the last quiet weather day for a while. Warm temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s will make it feel quite springlike. Showers and thunderstorms will enter the area from the west on Friday.

The warm front that was supposed to bring increasing clouds today continued to trend slower than the models expected and has still not yet made it to the Appalachian Mountains. As a result, more sunshine boosted temperatures higher into the 70s as shown in this graphic.

We are going to try to squeak out one more dry day before an extended period of wet weather commences on Sunday. So enjoy Saturday! Temperatures will be the most pleasant of any day this week so far!
