A message from Christiana at the Door County Candle Co. & Candle Bar
Lately, my heart has felt heavy. As much as I focus on light, the weight of others' anger and negativity can be hard to bear. Supporting Ukraine—my heritage, my roots—was never about division. It was about connection, about hope, and about believing in the power of kindness to bring change.
Three years ago, we launched the Ukraine candle. Its purpose was simple and honest: to raise funds, to create awareness, and to stand in solidarity with those who needed it most. It carried a piece of my heart, and it always will.
But here’s the thing. This world doesn’t need more hate. Not online. Not behind keyboards. Not in our hearts. If you don’t agree with something, you don’t have to agree—that’s okay. What isn’t okay is meeting it with cruelty and malice.
This week, I’ve been reminding myself to take the high road. I refuse to respond to hate with hate. I refuse to add to the noise and hurt. Instead, I’m focusing on the good we can do, even when it feels small. The high road has more room for kindness, for understanding, for listening.
As Martin Luther King, Jr said, “I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.”
To everyone who has supported us, shared a kind word, or simply chosen empathy over anger, thank you. You remind me of the quiet power that compassion holds. And to everyone reading this today, I invite you to pause and reflect. What kind of ripple do your words and actions send into the world? Are they building bridges, or burning them?
I’ll always be proud of the Ukraine candle and the mission behind it. To me, it’s more than wax and a wick—it’s a symbol of resilience, of love for my heritage, and of hope for a better tomorrow.
If you’re feeling burdened by heaviness, I hope this inspires you to lighten the load with kindness. Together, even in the smallest ways, we can make this world a little gentler and brighter.
