As Hurricane Ian lashed western Cuba and headed for Florida's west coast on September 27, it moved over an abundant fuel source: warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico.
The red map shows sea surface temperatures measured on September 26 by several satellites and ocean instruments and processed by NASA scientists. Sea surface temperatures above 27.8Β° Celsius or 82.04Β° Fahrenheit (shown in red) can sustain and intensify hurricanes as thermal energy moves from the sea to the sky.
