Around the millennium, Steven Baker was involved in a bad car accident while on his way home from work one night. Steven was stopped, waiting at a traffic light and heard a long screech coming up behind him. Then came the hit... full speed. With his foot on the break, his car was shoved 54 feet through the intersection. Apparently, the lady that was driving had fallen asleep on pain pills. Most of the money from the insurance settlement went toward getting himself a new vehicle, but Steven used what was left to purchase some recording equiupment and set up a small basement studio at his grandparents’ house, where he was living at the time. Aside from recording his own musical endeavours, Steven started offering his production and promotion services to other local bands around the region. Dozing Lady Records was born.
After relocating to Bowling Green, Kentucky, in 2007, Steven bought a second wave of equipment... this time more focused on duplication and retail packaging. Initially he had done this to help with promotions for his own projects, but, again, found that other musicians in the area were interested in the professional appearance and packaging options that he could offer. It was during his college years in Bowling Green (2007-2011) that Dozing Lady Records became most prosperous. Steven began offering thermal, direct-to-disc printing, artwork design, card-stock sleeve packaging with full-color laser printing, shrink-wrapping, the whole nine yards. Record stores in the area began filling their independent and local music sections with releases that were lovingly bound in what was quickly becoming Steven’s trademark packaging. Business boomed quickly over those four years for the company, and Steven was able to start offering jewel case options with full-printed and stapled booklets. Dozing Lady Records opened a P.O. box and began taking mail orders from other parts of the state as well.
The draw for DLR has always been “no minimum” and a flat-rate pricing plan that includes a small amount for a set-up fee to begin with. Most of the larger duplication and replication services would offer similar products, but have high minimum quantities. The local artists loved the fact that they could come to Steven, right there in their hometown, a couple days before a gig and buy 1o or 12 more copies of their album if they wanted them to sell them the night of their show. With manufacturing costs at a mere $2 each, the artists were able to sell their merchandise for as low as $5 at a show and still make money off each copy.
Today, 20 years after the launch of Dozing Lady Records in Nicholasville, Kentucky, Steven continues to maintain the business, but mostly as an umbrella company for his many active personal projects. Steven currently publishes music under five different artistic personae: The Dementia Cookie Box, X-Ray Man, The Snowflake Babies, Voltaic Variety Show, and simply put, Steven Baker. Just a few weeks ago, Steven added Claw to the Dozing Lady catalog. Claw was the second band that Steven was ever a part of, making music around central Kentucky in 1997/98. All of the original Claw recordings, demos, rehearsal sessions and live audio have been painstakingly remastered for digital release on all major streaming and download platforms.
